I would argue that Twitter is mainly used by people who think they are more important/interesting than they actually are. Which is why most only have a small interested and active following, like Herbie said.  Obviously there are exceptions to this rule (Like people who use it to keep in touch with family etc and Mr Fry and obviously TK) However, most tweets from family are about as interesting as your auntie's holiday snaps from her trip to Blackpool 5 years ago. (In the same way that most blogs are awful)

You're making the assumption that most people on twitter are there to tell people things rather than just follow people they find interesting.

I'd say twitter is made up of.

Broadcasters: (e.g. Stephen Fry) who provide active content
ReBroadcasters: (e.g. Kinboshi) who don't ever (ever ever ever) say anything interesting themselves but they notice when other people do and retweet (rebroadcast) it.
Consumers: (e.g. the vast majority of those on twitter) who join twitter primarily to read content, rather than to write it

Obviously if people only really join to follow people - they might occasionally have something to say themselves, but that's not the reason they're there.

The self important people you and Herbie H refer to are part of the 'Broadcasters' subset, and as such might represent a significant minority of that section - but the vast majority of people on twitter don't have anything much to say and they know they don't have much to say; they're there to read and interact rather than to be a content provider.

imo

Obviously you're correct that  more people follow than post...most post are still shyte though, in the same way that blogs are.

  I said something interesting, once.

I'm more of a consumer though - and use twitter to source news and information about subjects I'm interested in.  Interacting with the people involved makes it more interesting than merely observing and passively receiving information (for me anyway).

Twitter is a lot of different things to different people.  The ones who complain that it's 95% crap aren't wrong - but they're missing out on the fact you can choose what you read, who you follow and engage with.  That's the 5% that has value to you.  It's the same with the internet in general - mostly crap, but if only 5% is any good, the amount of stuff out there means that the 5% (I think it's probably less than that, but whatever) is more than enough for anyone.

Oh my, what a day!

I'll return later to the above discussion, which fascinates. Human psychology is a wonderfully fascinating thing, & that's what it is - the way the mind works.

But for now, an amazing day for us in Vegas.

We took three players into Day 4, out of a party of 6 qualifiers.

Of today's three, one - "Direwolf" - felll just short of the money, agonisingly close.

Another - "Penguin7" - min-cashed, after being near felted on Day Three, & somehow hanging in. He cashed for $19,000, not a bad return on his £13 Satellite investment, but more than that, it was the poker day of his life, a Maiden 3 year old winning the Derby, so to speak. He's made up.

The third - "KidGirlGy", a housewife from Grimsby, a "recreational" poker player in every sense of the word, & a lovely lady, ended the day, after struggling throughout, on 372,000 - nigh on average. (Blinds are 2,500/5,000/500). And she's not finished yet, not by any means.

Meanwhile, a SP Cash Hotpot, Redmond Lee, who kills the £5 £10 SP Cash Tables, & who led Day One in 2009, began today on 230,000. And ended it on 1,180,000, making him 13th overall, I believe. We just interviewed him, & he speaks very well, too.

One of those days that only occur once in a blue moon.

Great to see they've cashed, good luck to the two left, especially Kidgirl !

As Mr Penguin said $19,000 ,a 2 week holiday and the time of his life........... for £13.

What a great game poker is. thumbs up

Poker journalists I'd recommend, you get more info from here time to time and it's all uncensored as opposed to the official reports. Also during the FT in November, these people will be (mostly there)

@KevMath - He's the wikipedia of poker and does not sleep.

@BJNemeth - When not whining about the world cup, is always informative

@Taopauly - DrPauly who writes the Tao of Poker blog.

@DanaImmanuel - It's Danafish!

@HardBoiledPoker - Shamus from Pokernews, an excellent writer who doesn't get nearly enough credit as he deserves.

@Change100 - Wonderfully sarcastic occasional tweets.

@_otis_ - Brad Willis who writes the PokerstarsBlog and occasionally has degen binges of Pai-Gow.

@Pokerati - Dan Michalski who runs Pokerati.com

@ftrainpoker - Ftrain from Pokernews, very dry and funny.

@BenjoDiMeo - Benjo is Winamax's main reporter. He's also permanently pissed off with everything (probs why he's one of my best friends). He's also a genius.

The MadYank thread got my mind racing, & looking for a picture of him, I unearthed via google this photo, can anyone date it?

This photo, in which Ron Fanelli, aka MadYank, is second left, foreground, evoked a few memories. It's at a Cambridge University Cup.

Siting to Ron's left, is Bob Coombes, who I've not seen since around 2005, (I know his wife passed away, & then Bob had a rough time with his own health), the Dealer is one S. Trumper (a lifelong friend of Bob), & at the other end of the Table is none other than the late Brendan Hartnell, who finished as runner-up to Bob.

Curious to see Bob lighting up a cigarette indoors, & the guy next to him puffing away. The Trophy was presented by a much younger & slimmer Phil Hellmuth.

A much younger looking Chompy, possibly.

The Website I found mentioned Cambridge University Poker Society, but they were probably playing the Oxford Cup, yeah.

The whole series of photos are here......
