Anyone worried about the information google has from their search history being shared a lot more widely?

 https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/02/how-remove-your-google-search-history-googles-new-privacy-policy-takes-effect

If you haven't done this already, might be an idea to do it now?

Doesn't work for me - going to the history link just sends me to the main google page.

Go to the address bar and add /history to the address already there.

Thanks Sandy - though it turns out I'd already done it sometime in the past.

Not even a little bit worried, can you explain why I should be?

Have to say, Dan, I'm with Hoppo here, I don't really see the problem.

I have a fairly eclectic search history, & whilst some of it, to do with my job, is a bit sensitive, there is nothing in my "Search History" I would be too bothered about.

We are not forced to use google, either, at work, for all manner of odd reasons, I use "Bing". We are not forced, in fact, to use ANY search engines, we just choose to, to make our life easier.  It's their train set, so they set the rules, & we can choose to accept them, or not use them.

You don't use YouTube, see adwords anywhere, ever use Google for search, use Google maps, ever use chrome, have an android phone that logs everywhere you've been on the web (and physically too), etc.?

Yes, it is their set of rules - they allow you to opt out of sharing your web history with their advertising department as part of their rules.  If it doesn't bother you, then that's fine.

I must be missing something. I don't understand why it would bother anyone apart from terrorists and paedophiles?

I would prefer it if any adverts I saw were things I might actually want, or relevant to the places I have been.

This has all been around for ages hasn't it? Since the whole Google read everything in your gmail to tailor the adds around the email viewing pane?

I've popped over from the diary ran by red-dog for a looksie as that diary is closed for the day. I notice that most of the photos on here are also posted next door. This is rather disappointing, I'm not sure I'll stay long...

Hurtful.

This one is wholly art-free, if it helps?

No it's quite different.  What was shown was only shown to you - not shared with everyone else and tied to you as an individual.

Didn't you once want a thread removed from blonde because it might have been 'sensitive'?

Not sure how that compares, can you help me?

I asked for the mass drinking thread to be hidden for a few weeks as there was a possibility I would have an interview for a pretty big position and was concerned I might be googled.

I assume google arent going to sell my search history to any possible future employer? If they are I dont think I would ever get a job in an American University Wink

Surely the worst this is all going to be used for is still marketing? Possibly some national safety issues (know you will love that one Dan)!

What is your worry? Worst case scenario what part of your info do Google sell to whom, and what do they do with it that makes it worth even raising an eyebrow about?

Not just your search history, pretty much every website you visit.

If people aren't bothered by it, that's fine.  It's up to everyone what they want to share.

Stop it!

What is the risk of people knowing this information, you make me feel like I am going to endanger myself if I don't take this more seriously!

Rolf Harris apparently a massive twat as well.

That'll have to do for my contribution to this great diary for today.

In contrast, had a 2 hour conversation with Louis Theroux on a train and he was as personable as he is on TV

Frankie Boyle is actually a lot nicer than he appears on TV too
