I don't know if you have seen this, but it is an odd story

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-48553568

I don't even know that much about sailing, but know you should give way to starboard.  In the second picture you can see the Russian ship (on starboard) has had to swerve because of its wake.  The American ship should have realised it was on a collision course and taken avoiding action long before they got this close, but its wake suggests it is going in a straight line.

The oddest thing about it is that the second picture is provided by the US Navy, and it makes them look bad.  If the Russian ship did make an unsafe manoeuvere, why not show a picture where the Russian ship is swerving off its line towards the American ship?

So I am left a bit puzzled by it, why hasn't anyone at any stage, at the BBC or the US Navy, gone hold on this picture contradicts the story we are telling?

If somebody knows more than me please pipe up, as my knowledge is limited to sailing the odd dinghy many years ago and watching sailing videos on youtube.

The US Navy produced a statement here:  https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=109833

Probably raises more issues than it solves.   It states the Russian vessel came from behind, but it is still coming from starboard?

Then it says that the US vessel is applying full reverse, but if it carried on as normal the Russian ship would have passed behind?

Never driven a ship, so will defer to Marky.

I only did it for my taskbook,  when I was on HMS Fearless for ~3 months, and we just followed directions from the bridge Cheesy

Another piece from Next door incoming.

There are two articles going up Next door today, but one of them won't translate at all well, as it's mainly photos of the players at the Welcome Party, none of whom will be familiar to the blonde massive, so I'll spare you that.

Vegas - larger than life.

It's such a cliche, "larger than life", but when you go to Vegas the phrase just keeps running through your mind day after day. The place is ridiculous.

The Palms, which is about half a mile off Strip, & right opposite The Rio, have installed a new Video Screen on the exterior of their building. Which is 30 storeys (90 yards) high.

Extraordinary clarity, too, & it can be seen for miles. Passengers on aircraft approaching or leaving McCarron Airport can read what it says with ease, though to be fair, McCarron is barely a mile from the centre of the Strip. No City on earth has a better placed Airport, & not a soul complains about noise pollution.

Here's that Palms Video Screen;

Head to the strip from Palms, turn right, & Paris Hotel, right opposite Bellagio, has it's own Eiffel Tower. Just a miniature one, but a pretty big miniature.

Head another half a mile along the Strip, & on the corner of Las Vegas Bvd ("The Strip") & Tropicana sits New York New York Hotel, where they have a replica Statue of Liberty.

Of, & that backdrop of the New York city skyline behind it? That's a trick of the eye, it's actually one building - the New York New York Hotel, built to mimic New York.  In Vegas, everything is possible.

This tops the lot though.

I was in Palazzo last night, which is a pretty posh Hotel, sandwiched between Venetian & Wynn, & is where the Sky Poker qualifiers are holed up.

And this blew my mind away.

I present Exhibit 1;

Yup, that's a toilet door.

Even her Maj at Buck Palace does not have a karzy door that big.
