Hi Tony

You like stories. I think this is amazing. What made the father run to a river I don't know
when his daughter went missing in a field!.

save of the year IMHO

C&P from the BBC

The father of a little girl sucked 150ft (46m) along an underground drain has told how she had stopped breathing when he pulled her from the River Wear.

Leona Baxter, three, was playing in a puddle when she disappeared. She had been washed into the uncovered drain and was thrown out into the river.

Her father Mark, 34, of Leeming, North Yorkshire, jumped into the water and pulled her to safety.

Police officers said the child "miraculously" avoided serious injury.

Leona's mother Beverley, 32, performed first aid on the youngster who also suffered a cut to her head.

'Coughing and spluttering'

Mr Baxter said when his daughter disappeared from view he realised she had fallen down a storm drain and that if it was going to go anywhere it would go to the river.

"I ran across the river and I saw what I thought was Leona's coat and I realised it was Leona floating face down in the river," he said.

"So I jumped over the side, jumped in, grabbed her and the water went up to my shoulder.

"I put her over my shoulder and patted her back because she wasn't breathing.

Leona is recovering in hospital after her ordeal

"I couldn't move holding Leona as my wellies had filled with water, so I stayed balanced and handed her to Bev who was on a bank.

"As soon as Leona was coughing and spluttering and being sick, I felt much happier because she was breathing then."

Police said Leona travelled about 150ft underground before being swept into the River Wear, near Durham Cricket ground, on Sunday evening.

Leona was playing with her sister Kiah, six, and the family pet dog Brophy in a puddle at a playground in Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street, when the accident happened.

It is believed the storm drain cover, which had been under about 8in (20cm) of water, was pushed off by a sudden release of water pressure.

Certain death

The dog, which was also sucked into the drain, is still missing.

Sgt Keith Wardle, of Durham Police, said: "Fortunately when the girl and her dog disappeared her dad quickly realised what was happening.

"He ran to the river bank and plucked her from the swollen river."

A police spokeswoman said the girl's father had saved her from "almost certain death".

Alistair Baker, spokesman for Northumbrian Water, said: "This was obviously a horrendous ordeal for such a little girl.

"A tragedy was averted thanks to the heroics of her father."

Isn't it amazing that you could take that photograph all those years ago,  re-discover it half a lifetime later, and within the space of a few moments, share it with the world.

What would your dad have said?

I have a few more at home, of Dad on the footplate of Steam Locos. Maria has promised to scan them for me.

What would Dad have said? He's thrilled.

I "got on" in life quite well, but only after he passed away, I became successful in business, behaved (mostly) decently to others, (his obsessive mantra) & the oddest of retirements which you could not have imagined would happen. My great regret is that he is not here to share it with me, but we still "talk". Everything I am, for better or worse, is because of him. Put it another way. I don't really care who likes me or dislikes me, so long as I don't disappoint him. He was solid gold.

He had another Son (my half-brother) by my Stepmother, who is the most wonderful man you could ever meet, the absolute copy of his Dad. His name is Kenny, & I must write down his story one day, it's an almost unbelievably moving story, something so beautifully ironic you would ever hear. He is a God amongst men. A birthday card & pressie will arrive through the letter-box in the morning from him, 100% guaranteed, as it does every Birthday & evey Christmas. I have not sent him a card, or spoken to him, in 20 years. Long story, that. I am, in truth, the family black-sheep, with some edge & attitude not shared by the rest of the Kendallls. Each to their own.

I'll also get a Birthday Card from my Sister tomorrow, rinse repeat as per Kenny. I've not sent her a card in 30 years. She's a truly remarkable woman, who has overcome the most excruciating adversity in life. She'll ring me, too, & I'll try & dodge the call, as I always do. I can't explain why, I'm just not designed to "do" family stuff. She has 3 - well, 4, but that's another weird story - kids, all grown up now. Three of them are like Kenny, real angels, one is more of my stamp, a bit "odd".

Thanks John - I had planned to Post that.

What quick thinking, especially in the circumstances, by the father! A true miracle.

I think it was because you hadn't acknowledged it was your birthday. But you have now so you can ignore him.

I spent most of today at Chili's house, she's helping me "get my house in order" as to my paperwork & stuff. My paperwork has always been looked after by others, PA's at work, then Wendy, but for the last 3 or 4 years, it's just piled up. A fortnight back, I took 4 bags full of paperwork across to Maria, & she filed them all beautifully.

I took across three more box files full today. And in amongst scores, possibly hundreds, of Share Certificates (I take Scrip Divs where possible, so I get a lot of small denom Share Certs), wage slips dating back to the 80's, & all manner of old bills & paraphanelia, there were some old photographs of mine, which Maria was able to scan for me.

I was in a foul mood, as I've had a bad 24 hours. Ho-hum. But amongst those 'photos was a real diamond, & one which cheered me up no end. You cannot begin to imagine the happiness this particular photograph gave me. I took the 'photo myself.

This is a Class 52 Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive, "Western Enterprise", built at BREL Swindon Works in 1961. I have no idea when the picture was taken, but I'd imagine it was around 1962 or 1963.

The Driver is my Dad. I can't tell you how proud I was of him, & he of me. Dad's are the best thing ever invented.

please tell my 2 sons and 2 daughters that tony lol

I'll pass on that! But it's a 2 way street. Way too complicated & awkward to try & put into writing.

very similar to me tony, dont know why it is but im much the same. if my family need me they only have to say and il be there and fight there corner to the death if need be. if they dont they live there own life, doesnt mean i dont love them any less.

since my brother died i have had snide emails, text etc from parts of the family making nasty comments that i wasn't there for him in his last year or so when his illness was at its worst.
they dont understand, me and tony (my bruv) had an understanding, if we need each other we would call, thats all he had to do and i woulda been there every minute every day til he died, but he didnt want that, he didnt want to be fussed around.

he was a real man and faced what the lord threw at him and me being there or not wouldn't made no difference he new that.

i have always been the black sheep of my family

Funnily enough I sent my Dad an email this evening thanking him for all his support recently and telling him I loved him. Not sure why we are all feeling this way - perhaps it's because the world is going to end today?

Personally, I always treat Birthdays & Crimble as "reflection time", & that's why I enjoy them. I like to be alone with my thoughts, & I'm as happy as larry doing so. Every Christmas I have to play "dodgems", diplomatically dodging the invites from kind friends who think it's sad I'm alone. They don't understand, that's just how I am. Very happily so.

I shall spend Wednesday on my own, but might venture down to Luton in the evening. I'm resting up for a few days, as I get seriously busy from Friday onwards for 5 days straight.

I hope you'll be at Luton, by the way, going for the 4-timer!

Thank you for the phone-message, sorry I missed it, the 'phone was downstairs, ditto to John "Regards" Grice.
