Isn't it amazing that you could take that photograph all those years ago,  re-discover it half a lifetime later, and within the space of a few moments, share it with the world.

What would your dad have said?

This was taken at  Wedding, no idea when. The car was brand spanking new, so the Reg Plate may be a clue. It was a BMW 525, a "Classic" car if ever there was one, & the first Executive Car I'd ever had. (It was a Company Car). I'd had Rover 800's, Golf GTI's, Capri 3 litre, 2.8 Cortina Ghia, & suchlike, but they were a pile of poo compared to this. I was so proud of that car, & I sort of "lost it" a few years later in very sad circumstances. Eventually, I purchased it back privately, & kept it for many years as a "second car" for private (non-business) purposes.

The wedding was for a most interesting guy, "Dan". He was an American Lawyer, living in Sheffield, as he'd met a local lass. She was the daughter of a geezer who started a "Designer Jeans" Company, worth a fortune he was.

I met Dan as  a Management Consultant, & I used him for some Staff Training. He was not legally qualified to practice Law in the UK, so did Consulting work for me.

I came to know him very well, & it was an odd story.

He contracted leukemia during the time I knew him - I knew him for 10 years or so. He beat it, or at least it became "in remission", & he had to go for tests at the Hossie every 3 months. We developed a "lucky" routine where I'd give him some coins to ring me from the Hossie payphone after his Tests. (No, or very few, Moby's in those days).

Later, he moved back to America, & became involved in Legal work over which he & I fell out. A group of people who had received pioneering heart surgery, which involved some sort of mechanical implant in the heart, started to suffer problems with the implant after 10 or 12 years. Some of them died, because the implant device failed. Their dependents, & in some cases those still surviving, though now unwell again, formed  a collective to sue the manufacturers. All these sick & dying people, who were suing the manufacturer, had had their lives extended by at least 10 years because of the implant. Dan was their Attorney, & it was he who led the team suing the manufacturers. He was seeking, on each of their behalf, multi-millions $$$'settlements for "negligence". Despite having lived at least 10 years longer than they otherwise would. Hardly the way to encourage innovative, life extending, if not life-saving, medical practices, eh?

I thought this to be wholly unethical, not to say immoral. In fact, legally, it was wholly ethical, & I now understand that. It was still immoral, though, & we never spoke again.

Anyway, get my get-up. Proper wedding, that. So far as I can recall, it was the last wedding I ever attended. As sure as God made little apples, I shall go to the grave without going to another. Even if only to avoid that bloody fancy dress malarky.

Where was it taken Tikay?

Paddington Ralway Station. In those days, it was of Cathedral grandeur, but they've ruined it now with coffee bars & W H Smiths & suchlike.

My Grandad - Grandad Angell, my Dad, were both Engine Fireman, & then Drivers, based at Old Oak Common Depot. (Shed Code 81a), & Paddington was just a few miles from there, so the Locos that worked the GWR West-country services were all based at OOC. My Sister, who now lives in Australia, worked at Paddington Station. We lived on a Railway Housing Estate - like a Council Estate, but we thought it "posher", because we all had privet hedges (!). The Estate was known as the GWRHA (GWR Housing Association). When the Thatcher "encourage more home ownership" thing came in, sitting Tenants were offered these Houses very cheaply, depending how long they had live there. "Our" home was on offer for.....£2,000! Dad never had that sort of money, even if you deducted a zero, but I stumped up for it, I was doing OK by then, it was no big deal to me. Many years later, long after he died, it was sold by my Stepmother for £435,000.....

I spent most of today at Chili's house, she's helping me "get my house in order" as to my paperwork & stuff. My paperwork has always been looked after by others, PA's at work, then Wendy, but for the last 3 or 4 years, it's just piled up. A fortnight back, I took 4 bags full of paperwork across to Maria, & she filed them all beautifully.

I took across three more box files full today. And in amongst scores, possibly hundreds, of Share Certificates (I take Scrip Divs where possible, so I get a lot of small denom Share Certs), wage slips dating back to the 80's, & all manner of old bills & paraphanelia, there were some old photographs of mine, which Maria was able to scan for me.

I was in a foul mood, as I've had a bad 24 hours. Ho-hum. But amongst those 'photos was a real diamond, & one which cheered me up no end. You cannot begin to imagine the happiness this particular photograph gave me. I took the 'photo myself.

This is a Class 52 Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive, "Western Enterprise", built at BREL Swindon Works in 1961. I have no idea when the picture was taken, but I'd imagine it was around 1962 or 1963.

The Driver is my Dad. I can't tell you how proud I was of him, & he of me. Dad's are the best thing ever invented.

please tell my 2 sons and 2 daughters that tony lol
