how on earth can you compare someone's right to wear a burka with a right to blow a vuvuzela?  Can other people really be annoyed/offended by what someone else chooses to wear?  Unless it's obscene, I very much doubt it.  Those bloody horn things are incredibly annoying though, and if they are as loud as they sound on the telly, could potentially cause damage to people's hearing.

edit: boo boldie beat me to it, and said it better Sad

next they will be banning talking at the table...... Can somebody tell me why anybody would need to wear a burka?

Maybe because the men tell them they have to.

religious issues aside, if someone WANTS to wear a burka let 'em wear a burka.  I don't need to wear jeans and t-shirts but I do.

not sure wearing something comfy and practical because you want to is comparable to wearing something ridic impractical because you're forced to

I agree that the vuvazela is an irritating shit of a thing. That is my opinion. But in SA it is not their opinion, they were encouraged, because they are cultural. So there are two different attitudes to the same thing. It's the enforcement of one attitude over another that gets me. I'm not comparing a plastic trumpet to wearing a burka, I'm highlighting the hypocrisy of glorifying our attitude to tolerance when we ban trivial things. I think the argument about not wanting noise pollution at football grounds is a weak one, weaker than the argument about burkas and national security anyway. It's about the erosion of freedom. Why can't you wear a hoody in certain places? Deleting posts is the same. Tilts me the feck out.

don't really care but I don't see a huge problem with it. it's not like it's a vital part of the religion, I see more people in burkas in london than in any islamic country I've been to. they're generally used over here as a way to reassert control by people who've travelled to the west and realised they don't have quite the control over their women that they had back home

They're banned in a few countries where Islam is the primary religion - places like Tunisia eg.

I would tend to go the ban route in public , like hoodies are in some places, and white pointy sheety type hats too. Think it would be good to let people wear them in their houses though.

I think it's pretty lame that we might tell a nurse to not wear a christian symbol on a chain, but a much more obvious symbol of oppression is tolerated pretty readily.

The thing is, they don't wear them at home.  It's only when they're out in public and men might be encouraged to think impure thoughts if they can see their skin/face/shape of their bodies.

I'm sure I've never seen a nurse in burka though...although I might be wrong.
