This really bad spell of weather absolutely fascinates.
I gather the cause is something called the "North Atlantic oscilliation", which is in - bear with me - "negative balance".
It's High Atmo pressure in the Arctic stopping low pressure systems further south from bringing us the warm trade winds from the West, in short.
And how long has this "negative balance" anchored it? 15 months, a record apparently. Hence last winter was exceptionally cold, too.
And if you did not think the FT knew how to sneak in clever one-liners & jokes, how about this.
"
The UK Met Office is forecasting some relief from the intense cold....",
before helpfully adding "....
by the first half of January
".
Tell you what - bad weather is fabulous for Online Poker rooms!

The sun is losing its power apparently, and winters more severe than the last hundred years are set to be the norm. Read it, it must be true

The bad weather is not just the UK, it seems.
Currently, airport, road & rail chaos is as bad, or worse, in Germany, France, Holland, Italy, etc.
Everyone says "they" (Authority, in all forms) got it wrong, & failed to deal with the weather. What utter tosh.
To gear up for these freak conditions which occur maybe 1 day in 500 on average would add a few % to costs. Then the moaning minnies would moan.
Did you know that Gatwick has 47 "snow-clearing machines" in it's fleet, & BAA owned rival Heathrow has 69?
Where "they" (it's always "they"....) HAVE gone wrong is communication, or lack of. It's a disgrace, but it's the same right across the spectrum.
Got a problem? Tell everyone, & the sooner the better. The truth is good, & it's better out than in, & the earlier the better.

There was a lunar eclipse? Doh!!
Me: Wow, what a fabulous full moon.
Mrs Red after going outdoors some time later: You're barmy, it's a half-moon.
Me after going outdoors yet later still: It's a full moon, are you blind?
Mrs Red: Well it was a half moon just now.
Me: You can never admit you're wrong can you.....?

This will be the last Christmas before Jake gets the "I want" virus I fear
At the moment everything he asks for costs about £2.
Next Christmas it will be 200 times that at least.

A brilliant topic for the day! You may know I am on a weight loss crusade! Today I have reach my first target of 16 st, over a week ahead of schedule, but I love the fact (given my profession) that I can say that I weight 2 bags of cement!
Today I'll be known as 2 bags!
Ty tikay, you have brightened my day with that little nugget!
No, I was not aware.
How much did you weigh when you started the diet?
What is your target weight?
What timescale have you set to achieve it?
I was reflecting this week on my year, & how happy & good I felt whilst I was hard-dieting, a process that took over 4 months, during which I shed 5 stone. I was never happier, & never felt better, physically & mentally.
Typically & illogically, I'm piling it alll back on now, & don't feel so good mentally, & far far worse physically, & struggle to get out of bed every morning, instead of springing out of bed like a springy happy thing, now it's all groan & moan, aches & pains.
I can't wait until the New Year, when I start again. Meanwhile, & equally illogically, because I'm due to start another diet soon, I'm binge eating terribly now. You could not make up my stupidity at times.
And yet when I diet, I won't fail - it's the easiest & most satisfying thing I've done in years.

Like everything, it depends.
At the moment he is not avaricious at all.
He never comes out and demands anything, and only suggests things he might like when asked.
If it remains that way, he'll get what he asks for..
If he changes into one of those children who wants everything he sees, the answer will be somewhat different.
We'll see.
