Hi Tikay,
I can see this beauty from my garden.
It was built in honour of the Duke of Wellington after his victory in the battle of Waterloo.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_Monument,_Somerset

Wonderful. It's so good that we honour, respect & remember our fallen war heroes. And that is the real meaning of heroes.

Bit if a shame about that tacky fence around the base, but I guess it is there for a good reason. Or more likely a bad reason.

Reg Presley, he of the The Troggs, has died.

He was not your usual pop group singer.

He came from Hampshire, but had a West Country accent as I recall, proper Somerset twang.

The Troggs were big in the sixties, "Wild Thing" & other smash hits, but then disappeared before reforming 40 years later.

He wrote "Love is all around", which was the big "Wet Wet Wet" hit a few years ago.

Later, he went a bit David Icke, & became an authority on crop circles & all that nonsense. Pretty sure BBC 3 or 4 recently featured him on some arts Show.

Folks like Reg Presely were big stars to me, back in the day, & influenced how we lived our lives. I'm sure that Methuselah Minor will remember him well, as will Red-Dog.  I doubt anyone under the age of 40 will have heard of him. Justin Bieber ftw.

He became ill a year ago, & eventually succumbed to cancer.

All very depressing. He was 72.

Wild Thing was so raw and yet their other two major chart successes were A Girl Like You and Love is All Around both of which are anything but.

Trivia Corner...  Apparently 'the Troggs Tapes' which recorded a row between members of the band were an inspiration for This is Spinal Tap

BBC News carried this piece today.....

Each coloured line on this map represents an aircraft flight which either took off or landed in the south east of England on one day in July 2011

Aniother thing we take for granted, how safe air travel is. One mistake......

Yes, incredible contrast in styles.

They played a clip from a Reg Presley interview on Radio 4 this morning, Reg said that to record their album took a whole 2.5 hours!

You forgot to mention Neanderthal Love.

"I'm a Neanderthal boy, you're a Neanderthal girl,

Let's make neanderthal love in this Neanderthal world."

RIP Reg Presley.

<edit>

I've just discovered after all these years that that song was by Hotlegs who later evolved into 10CC.

Youi got me there for a moment, Ralph, as I could not recall that one.

10cc, mind you, were amazing, & I saw them Live many times. They were one of the best "Live" bands I ever saw.

Later, Godley & Creme ("Lol Creme") left & did a lot of superb stuff.

The Richard III discovery is remarkable isn't it?

http://www.itv.com/news/update/2013-02-04/archaeologists-moved-by-richard-iii-discovery/

Ten seperate wounds discovered on the remains

Marked curvature of the spine...

Under a car park in Leicestershire!!

Blew my mind. Carbon dated the bones and linked DNA to known descendants. Imagine trying to explain that to Richard III.

It left me cold, tbh.

I really can't get interested in history stuff for some reason. Bit like art, & space travel in a way, they do nothing for me.

SECRET Motorways, on the other hand......

Did you know there is a secret motorway in Gloucestershire?

Regarding the place on Earth I will go for the top of Uluru. I have not been there but I think the surrounding area is completely flat so you must be able to see a fair way.

A lot of people thinking the right way, but not getting the big mountain in a flat area - Kilimanjaro gives the view of the greatest area of the earth while standing on it.
