I was very late to Pink Floyd and kinda didnt want to like them, but loved Dark Side of the Moon.

Is this still Tikay's thread?

It was a bit of a punk and post-punk mandate to diss Pink Floyd I feel, along with everything to do with peace, love, and the psychedelic 1960's/'70's hippie generation.

Gramps, or what's left of him post Sky weekend, will be along shortly to explain why he included "Robbie" in his top ten alltime favourites a year or two back. Can't wait..

...and Malcolm McLaren picked Johnny Rotten to front his band because of his love of butter?

also so does a lot of tediously dated mediocre stuff that only people who were in to it at the time can appreciate because it reflects on their memories rather than the quality of the music*.

I think it would be pretty hard to name a great rock act whose creative spirit wasn't drug fuelled

Fair amount of our literary heritage was also opium inspired

that's a bit of a myth

some creative work in history has directly derived from a drug induced state - but most artists (literary or musical or whatever) who are known for their drug use were creative geniuses - and then they started using drugs.

If anything the creative output goes down when the drug use goes up - but with the right people, they've already cemented their 'legendary' status so the drug use and the creativity get artificially intertwined.

It was actually a different report on the link between creativity and drug use I was thinking of with the post above but when I tried to find it I came to this one first.

Alcohol and drugs ‘stifle artistic creativity’
International Congress of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Edinburgh, 21-24 June 2010.

It is a point of debate as to whether it helped or hindered, but there are plenty of bands who have been known to dabble.

Every now and then, you get an album like Superfly or What's Going On where drug abuse is openly criticised.

Sadly, they are the exception.

I've no idea what Janis Joplin, Pete Doherty, Oasis, Kurt Cobain, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, all of punk, all of prog up to Sabbath, the Madchestorrrrr early 90s scene, John Coltraine, Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse and however many others I'm forgetting would have done without their hobby/addiction/mistress but there we are.

Slight irony coming from someone called Nirvana, but then their best music came from the Pixies (fnah fnah)

My comment was, as ever, tongue in cheek, but the coexistence of drugs and the arts historically is a statement of fact. The worst consequence (deaths aside...so OK the second worst consequence) is giving awful musicians the impression their music is tolerable.

The connection suggested by psychologists is that the pressures of being creative geniuses is what provides the link between creativity and drugs (including alcohol) - they use their preferred drug/s as a coping mechanism.

Although it could be simpler than that - once you get famous, it's just really really easy to get drugs. It might just be that given the opportunity most people would end up with similar problems if the temptation was quite so readily available.
