Raise.

The average length of a Golf Course, tee to green x 18, is 7,000 yards, call it 4 miles.

Now ADD the walk between each green & next tee. Very often in excess of 100 yards per hole.

Now add the fact we hit the ball all over the place so don't walk in a straight line. Partner helps me look for my ball, I help him look for his.

Add walking back & forth on each green.

Must be every yard of 7 miles.

That's part of what I miss about golf - walking in the countryside. I used to play 5 or 6 rounds every week, too.

Now I doubt I walk more than 100 yards per day, tops. The local Tesco is half a mile away, I've never walked it once.

Starbucks vending machines
Saw one for the first time today. Obviously had to try one. More expensive than Costa express but tasted pretty much identical to the shop stuff. Far better options as well. Didn't realise that they'd been around for a couple of years. First one I've seen and I drink a lot of service station coffee!

Can they compete with Costa in this market? Think it will be difficult to catch up.

Wow, never seen one.

Where was that, Paul?

Costa got first run at Vending Machine coffee, & have all the premium sites (Motorway Service Stations etc), & only the Red Bean stuff (ugh, dreadful stuff), at the M & S and Shell Garages has a foothold in the market, so no, I doubt Starbucks can catch up in that market. Costa is owned by Whitbread, so has plenty of clout, too.

How are things, Baby & Penny (Pennie?) OK?

Playing much poker? You, I mean, not the baby.

Coffee Nation were the originals in the market. Used to be first job after setting off to work, whatever direction we were heading, Coffee Nation stop.

They were bought by Whitbread for £60 million in 2008, seemed like the machines disappeared overnight, obviously replaced by Costa.
Their founder wrote a book imaginatively titled erm,.,,, Wake up and sell the coffee. He actually sold the business for £23 million the same year Whitbread paid 60 for it !

It was "Coffee Nation" (& Dave Colclough) that first got me addicted to Service Station Coffee. I asumed that the Costa Machines that replaced them were just re-branding, never realised they were owned by someone else. What bright spark nicked £37 million on the resale? Some VC outfit, I presume?

I might just buy that book, "Wake Up & Smell the Coffee".

PS - Handy Tip - do NOT buy the "Starbucks Coffee Story". Worst book I've ever read.

Never heard of Quarndon Golf Club. Kedleston Park is nice though. As long as you're of suitable stock that is.

Load of roadworks round there at present. Should eventually improve things. Pity they haven't ever built the flyover.

FML, am sure I'm losing the plot. I meant Kedleston Golf Club, which is in......Quarndon..

Yes, not ideal for commoners like us. Nice track, though, with lovely views, and a nice little lakey thing.

My Dad played in The England Seniors at Keddleston Park and was drawn with John Beharrell and Ted Dexter.
Ted was in his late 60's playing off +1 and hitting the ball over 280 yards off the tee.
John had been the youngest winner of the British Amateur at 18 and an ex Captain of the R & A.
More importantly both were true gentlemen.

This chap?

Gotta love the background music on these Pathe News things.

That cannot be you Tony , your shirt is not tucked in and you would not be seen dead wearing trainers
on a golf course but the biggest giveaway is that that lad has a swing.

Your old golf tutor Russell would have been proud of you Tony.

Did you ever imagine the day when Jeremy Clarkson would be "begging you for forgiveness"?

That must have been some bollocking he got from the BBC.

"contrite" & "Clarkson" are words that rarely go hand in hand.

Some things are so fit for purpose they almost never change, or not significantly.

Wearing watches on our wrists, cars with 4 wheels, egg cups, mouse traps, brassieres. The basic idea was so right.

Included in these is the common or garden desk. In offices & studies the world over, a desk is a desk is a desk. We sit at our desk & do things.

But suddenly, there is a new desk, a different desk, & there is a huge demand.

The Standing Desk. A desk we stand at.

.....but wait.

No sooner the Standing Desk gained popularity, guess what came next?

Obvious really.

The Standing Desk Chair.

Brilliant.

I used a standing desk 12 years ago...

Have to admit I didn't see the point then (or now) of a standing chair to go with it tho...
