The cooked gammon joints are fantastic value, too.

Most cereals that taste the same as the brands are less than a quid also. I never used to go into them but I have one just around the corner from me so use it regularly now, they have some decent stuff and you can save some cash in the process.

A while ago, I went to buy some prosecco, as Aldi's is very good for its price, I'm assured. This was to cater for a birthday party, so I was looking for 32 bottles of this stuff.

So, there I am in the aisle. There are eight boxes of four on the shelf. Fandabidozie. Just what I need.

As I'm loading the trolley, a shop assistant approaches.

"Need any help, sir?"
"No, I should be ok. Just taking all these boxes"
"Oh", he said mournfully, "I'm afraid you can't have them all, sir"

There's a stumper. Is there a restriction on the amount of alcohol someone can buy? I deigned to ask why not.

"If we sell all these to you, we won't have any for display. That's all the stock we have"
"Hang on. Let me get this straight. You can't sell me these bottles of prosecco in case someone else wants to buy them?"
"Yes"
"But there is someone who wants to buy them. Me. Now."

I was worried I was going too quickly. I needn't have concerned myself.

"I'm sorry, but that's how it is"

Have you ever in your life encountered something so bewilderingly preposterous?

The issue managed to resolve itself because they were able to get more from a nearby store. I obviously got lucky. FWIW, the prosecco went down very well. We had strawberries to go in, too. Posh? Moi? Pah!

Funny story, but can see her logic. What do you think when you go into a supermarket and there are empty shelves or the thing you wanted isn't there?

I probably wouldn't go back in a hurry.

Now if ALL they sold was prosecco you might have more of a point...

The reason is to stop people running corner shops coming in, buying up all the stuff on special offer, then selling it on in their shop.

They certainly used to do this when I used to work on the tills in Tesco over 20 years ago - I remember a guy buying 200 packets of butter.

You need to have some brass balls to sell Aldi branded prosecco in a corner shop!

A couple of years ago Tesco mispriced a beer offer in Greenock (near Glasgow) - instead of buy 3 cases of beer & save £11 it was going through the till as 3 for £11. Police had to attend as it threatened to become a riot.

Funny this being discussed on here today, I was in Tesco just this morning and the guy at the next till had his trolley loaded with packs of kitkat chunkies (50% extra free) and Carte noir coffee ( half price) all still in the cardboard boxes, he'd obv just cleared the shelves, and I thought no way are they gonna let him buy that but the cashier didn't bat an eyelid
