Not true imo.. i know a few who have taken coke and not smoked a joint.. dont go hand in hand IMO.. but I have only ever smoked a couple of joints so no expert on this though.

However, when cannabis is illegal it puts you in touch with some people that you probably don't want to be in touch with..and THAT makes the use of hard drugs more likely.

I used to frequent a coffeeshop regularly and EVERYONE there knew not to mess with hard drugs..and you'd never consider it simply because you're not put in that sort of environment.

I know people who have taken various class As who haven't smoked cannabis (or cigarettes for that matter), so it's not true to say that everyone that uses/has used hard drugs 'started' on cigarettes and spliffs.

I've never even tried a ciggie haha, call me a nit if you wish. There is a story behind this. My parents have smoked all there life (well until recently) and I believe the smell of it is DISGUSTING, I think the media kinda got to me saying how bad it is for your health. Anyhow when I was 15 or so I remember getting drunk with a friend who tried to get me to smoke one, I said no but still, I had a fun day, I ended up chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool, and all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school when a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared and said, "You're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air." I begged and pleaded with her, day after day, but she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way. She gave me a kiss and she gave me my ticket, I put my Walkman on and said, "I might as well kick it!" First class, yo this is bad, drinkin' orange juice out of a champagne glass! Is this what the people of Bel-Air living like? Hmm, this might be alright. But wait I hear they're prissy, boots white and all that. Is this the type of place that they should send this cool cat? I don't think so, I'll see when I get there, I hope they're prepared, for the prince of Bel-Air. Well, uh, the plane landed and when I got out there was a dude look like a cop standin' there with my name out! I ain't tryin' get arrested yet, I just got here! I sprang with the quickness like lightning disappeared. I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said "FRESH" and it had dice in the mirror! If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought, "Nah forget it, yo homes to Bel-Air!" I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabbie, "Yo homes, smell ya later!" Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air.

That's a statement based on selection bias. You can't use the junkies who mostly started by smoking cannabis as evidence unless you account for the far greater number of cannabis smokers who didn't go on to harder drugs.
