tbh I don't like that painting at all, that type of thing bores me, I just don't like the style but it's all a matter of personal taste. pics that interest me more are Picasso's many versions of it.

Yes, that's the one. It's a fascinating painting.
is it a (sort of) self-portrait?
Little is known for certain, but it's a play on perspective and who is looking at who?
For example, is the artist in the painting? Is he looking in a mirror? Is the painting we're looking at the one in the painting? Or is it a completely different person, with the artist standing in the same place as the viewer? Is that him in the mirror at the back? Or is it the subject of his painting, perhaps the King and Queen? Is it even a mirror? Who's the dude in the back? Who's the little girl? Why's the other girl stepping o nthe dog? What are the paintings on the wall? Are they famous? Do they have any relevance? Is that a nun?!
I love this painting, produces so many questions. It's like a little mystery that you have to try and solve.
By the way, many of these question are Googable, (ie. girl in the middle is the princess, the painter is probably Velazquez when looking at other self-portraits), but that's why it's sometimes more fun to examine it without the aid of the Net. Anyone can analyse it, it's just about asking enough questions and coming up with the most logical answer.

Yeah, that top one is awesome, but mainly from an aesthetic point of view. As you said, personal taste. I like things that tell a story, draw you in to the painting and require you to ask questions to unfold a story. I also like painters that depict a moment in time, a snapshot, with lots of little gestures, actions and so on. Caravaggio was a master at it. Another of my faves.

I wouldnt give a fiver for the original or picasso's trio ... obv i would now i know who painted them, but seriously ... if you saw those picasso efforts in a charity shop window, you would just think awwww bless that was probs painted by a "challenged" individual.
