Terry Marsh - there's a name from the past.   A soldier turned fireman turned boxer turned politician.  Had to retire (undefeated) from boxing due to epilepsy.

Once also went on hunger strike in prison and stripped naked and covered himself in baby oil so the guards wouldn't be able to grab hold of him to forcefeed him.

Not all there, was Terry...

Also was the subject of one of my favourite mock sports trivia questions ...

Which boxer said "One more round and I would have killed him"

Very clever (notes it down for the Bash quiz).

funny how people see photos and think different things. My immediate thought was how you dont see ashtrays in peoples houses anymore. Everybody used to have them, even non smokers. And how you didnt actually think twice about lighting up when you went to visit friends and relatives.

Nowadays my da cant even get to light up in his own house, cos his grandkids spend so much time there  Grin

At the time this was all going on I was working in Basildon where Billy Marsh, Terry's brother, worked. Later he became "Jilly" Marsh (you can work that one out easy enough!) The Daily Star did a double page spread on it all, put "Jilly" in "that Liz Hurley Dress" and captioned the whole article with "I'll give Liz a run for her money"

Not all there, was Billy...

Nancy says you look like Dean Martin in the suit pic

were you lucky enough to be on Tom Mylands table??

I'm going off Nancy, fast.

No, Tom Myland never turned up on Monday. He had, apparently, been the subject of some ribbing on Sunday, ("we don't need Niall, we have Tom") & departed in a huff.

Nostalgic pics warning!

In my teenage years, I became a devotee, & sometime "mechanic" in Motorbike Racing. Mike Hailwood, Derek Minter, ("King of Brands"), Phil Ivey, Bill Boddice, Geoff Duke, (by then retired) all became my heroes.

The British bikes were limited to 250cc, 350cc (now discontinued I assume) & 500cc & 1,000cc Classes. The best handling 500cc bikes were Norton's, the best engines were Triumph Bonnevilles, though they were, I think, 650cc. In the 1,000cc classes, hybrid "Tritons" were the thing, a combo of Triumph engine & Norton "Feattherbed" frame.

The only alterntive to 350cc & 500cc Nortons wre AJS & Matchless, both from the same maker I believe. AJS did 350cc only, & Matchless did 500cc.

Trials riding was big then, & the ISDT (Inernational Six Day Trial) & the SSDT (Scottish equivelant) were the "Majors". AJS made bikes for Trials riding, & I spotted this one in Trowell Services today.

The owner had just got it, he'd traded it in a no-cash deal for '89 BMW 6 series CSI (?). He said it was a 1951 or 1952 model, & though I forgot to ask him, I fancy it's a 350cc, possibly 500cc.

I was at school for a year or so in my teens with a lad called Joe Erlich(sp?) who's dad was also called Joe and made motorbikes.

EMC mean anything to you Tony ?

The cylinder block is centre, the shiny cover with AJS on it is, I think, the timing chain cover, the gearbox is to the left of that, & the Oil Tank is the black thing, upper left.

Between the oil tank & cylinder is the Carburettor. Most of my adolesence was spent fiddling with carbs, "mixture setting", "rich" & "weak" needles, they were buggers, but things of beauty when you got the petrol/air mix just so. I don't think carburettors even exist now.

Just a bit! Joe was an Austrian, I believe, & he developed the 2 stroke engine to become very powerful. Even Mike Hailwood rode an EMC for a while. He had a factory in West London somewhere.

He built a 3 cylinder racing bike that was so (relatively) powerful that it got banned. His engines were DKW based I think.

Early 125cc races were dominated by EMC's, & some of them used JAP engines, which were the exclusive choice of all speedway bikes in the 50's & 60's.

The lever above the handlebars, inboard of the clutch lever, was, I surmise, the decompression lever, which you fettled to get the thing started.

Again, I'm not sure, but the little lever on the right of the handlebars, near the front brake lever, was an "Advance/Retard" setting I think. You really had to fettle those machines.
