Our access to music has improved beyond recognition since I was a kid. To hear modern music, we had crackly Pirate Radio stations, "vinyl" records, or reel-to-reel tape recorders. For visual, we had to go to a Venue.
That progrssed to Cassettes, CD's, Walkmans, M3 players, i-Pods, i-Tunes, Music Channels on the Sky platform - MTV, VHS, etc - even our mobile 'phones. Amazing.
For want of some calming down relaxation before bed the other night, I decided to go You-Tubing - what a resource that is!
I just vid-hopped through a mini-catalogue of stuff I'd enjoyed down the years, all via a few clicks. A true miracle.
This was my little You-Tube journey.....(which was 100% free-to-user!).
Floyd, "Shine on you Crazy Diamond"" - for the guitar solo.
Several Dave Gilmour guitar solos. He caresses that guitar so lovingly.
Dire Straits, Once Upon a Time in the West, Romeo & Juliet (for the guitar solo), & Sultans of Swing (ditto).
Several Knopfler guitar pieces.
The Notting HillBillys.
The Travelling Wilburys
Tom Petty
ELO (for Lynn).
George Michael, "Praying for Time" & "Too Funky". (Just because the Vids are so good).
Lightning Seeds - both their hits.
Rod Stewart & The Faces, "Stay With me" Live. Bad vid, great pereformance, including Ronnie Wood.
Catatonia (sp?) & that Cherys woman - what happened to her, I thought she was an awesome talent?
The Manics, pre their pretentious stage.
No Doubt, just for Gwen, though I loathe most of her subsequent stuff.
"Garbage", & "Stupid Girl".
And then I ended the session with what must be the best Promo/Charity cut ever (marred only by Tom Jones) - "Perfect Day". It's here.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=WJpQJWpVJdsDoes anyone know what became of Heather Small - she of M People (I think) & who shacked up with a Rugby League player IIRC.
I'm told (by YouTube) that the Artistes, in order of appearance, were.....
Lou Reed/Bono/Sky/David Bowie/Suzanne Vega/Elton John/Boyzone /Lesley Garrett/Burning Spear/Bono/Thomas Allen/Brodsky Quartet/Heather Small/Emmylou Harris/Tammy Wynette/Shane McGowan/Sheona White/Dr John/David Bowie/Robert Cray/Huey/Ian Brodie/Gabrielle/Dr John/Evan Dando/Emmylou Harris/Courtney Pine & BBC Symphony Orch/Brett Anderson/Visual Ministery Choir(VMC)/Joan Armatrading/Laurie Anderson/VMC/Heather Small/VMC/Tom Jones/VMC/Heather Small/VMC/Lou Reed
A lovely music journey, all for free, & 12 hours of perfect sleep followed. Value.
