So, if someone were to win you..would you have to do just about anything they told you to for that night? Get drinks, cook dinner, wash feet etc.?

Pretty much, I guess.

I did it last year, too, went to a house in Basildon, & they had me serving the drinks - beer, ffs. I had to TOUCH beer, sigh.

I'm rather looking forward to it, truth to tell. Heads-Up last year, it was between a guy from Basildon, & a guy from the Western Isles. I was so pleased the Basildon player won it.

I had occasion to stay overnight at the Petersham Hotel, in Petersham, Richmond, yesterday. Magnificent.

It sits between Richmond Hill, & Petersham Meadows, seperated from the meandering Thames only by Petersham Meadows.

It's so quintisentially (sp?) English, the view & tranquility were majestic.

Petersham Meadows are held in Trust, & was Leased from the Local Council for 100 years in 1902, the purpose of the Trust is to ensure the Meadows are never built upon, thus preserving the idyllic view.

The Lease was renewed by Richmond Council in 2001, for another 100 years, but with an Annual peppercorn rent - being a posy of wild flowers.

Splendid.

You can just see the Thames in the background here. (I was once told that every major Capital City in the world stands on a great river, & I'm not sure I buy that, though most clearly do).

The Dining Room of the Hotel had floor to ceiling windows, overlooking the Meadow & River, one of the finest English country views I've ever seen.

The room was lovely too, & had a Walk-In-Wardrobe, which I always think is rather posh. I so wanted the 'phone to ring when I was in there. "Where am I? In the Walk-in-Wardrobe of course". As I only had a t-shirt to hang up, bit of a waste really, but still rathr nice.

Here's a couple of views of the Car Park. Luton Days Inn, eat your heart out. Not bad for £60 the night (single room, including full English Brekkie), & if you search around, there are hundreds of these lovely old converted country-house Hotels in England.

So much fine detail in the construction & they did not do symmetry in those days, it was all sort of higglety pigglety.

The Architect who designed the new Extension, to the left as we look, was, I gather, later shot. Quite right too.

Lovely looking building, horrendous extension, how on earth did they get planning permission for that ?

I initially convinced myself that the right side of the building (as viewed) had also been extended - it's noticeably different in many ways, particularly window heads, but in fact, I think the Architect was just being a bit quirky & funky.

I was lucky enough to go to Uni next door to Richmond and it was great. Most of my social life from 18-21 was in that area.........top place. If I could have afforded to buy a house there after I left I would. It would mean I would now live in a mansion up north now without a mortgage, one of my biggest regrets ever in life, I should have pushed the boat out on that one occasion.

It defies belief Ralph. Those beautiful Meadows, & view, are protected for 2 centuries, & then they are allowed to bulld that monstrosity on the end. A brown envelope jobbie, if you ask me.

I had a wander round Richmond, &, together with Petersham, & parts of Kew, it's just beautiful, & Property Prices must be astronomic. What a lovely part of the world.

As a young man, Richmond was part of my stomping ground, & I used to visit a rock club there, & I saw the Stones playing live, just before "Satisfaction" etc.

In Kew, there was a big boozer by the River, (the "Boat House" maybe?), & it had a long stretch of towpath, where all the courting couples in their cards parked up every night. I had a knee-trembler or two there.

Kew Gardens - "The Royal Botanical Society" used to be one old penny to get in, but I imagine it's more expensive now. The Kew Gardens boundary wall was constructed entirely of "London Stocks", & stands to this day.
