Here ya go Dunk ... Brunel was born here in Pompey by the way

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isambard_Kingdom_Brunel

Didn't know he was French!

I do not believe he was. His Father - Marc Isambard Brunel - also very talented, was French though.

If you can find an article about IKB's design & construction of Bristol Harbour, it's well worth a read. Prompted by google now, but omitted from my "from memory" list of IKB achievements yesterday was Bristol Temple Meads Station - a true wonder - & Sonning Cutting.

footy results?

To the best of my not inconsiderable knowledge on all things geeky, there is no such Show as "footy results". Tighty will be disgusted with you.

I guess she means 'Sports Report'.

Well she should say so then. "footy results" indeed, pft.

But yes, "Sports Report", now in it's 62nd year.

The theme tune is so familiar that it can be written de dum de dum style & be instantly recognized. It's so olde-world, it just triggers so many childhood memories.

"de dum, de dum, de dum, de dum, de diddley dum, de dum".

Antiques Roadshow?

Shocker.

No, sports-based.

The Show has been on every week for 61 years, & has only ever had TWO Announcers. The current Announcer took over 36 years ago.

Can't be footy results then.

Unless it's a farce of a quiz of course.

FFS. I clearly said "every week for 61 years during the football season".

Not even remotely similar.

Sports Report is.....

de dum, de dum, de dum, de dum, de diddley dum, de dum

The Archers (though I don't enjoy it so much since Walter Gabriel's sad demise) is......

dum de, dum de, dum de, dum, dum de, dum, de dar dar".

Surely even a Scot can see how different they are?

outrageous suggestion!  It's a well known fact that's there only ever been two footy results announcers.  If I'd googled I might have got the name of the show right Grin

Lol Grandad, thought you might bite there.

Out of the Blue is probably the most played tune by the Central Band after the Royal Air Force march past.

The RAF march past, I believe is the only march past without a "title" i.e. The Royal Navy march past is titled "Heart of Oak"

It appears that the British Army itself doesn't have a March Past as each regiment has one of their own.

Another piece of drivel for you. Did you know that my former Regiment - The Royal Scots where the only regiment to have two march past tunes?

Dumbartons Drums being the main tune, however when Royalty was present it was always "Daughter of the Regiment" in honour of Queen Victoria being "born into the regiment" her father Prince Edward the Duke of Kent being the Colonel of the regiment at that time.

I think the last "dum" probably needs to be "durrrm" or "dummm": I think it's a longer note than the other dums  Smiley
* kenjude congratulates myself on using a colon instead of a hyphen in the above sentence.

And on that note, I was lamenting, in an Office Communicator conversaion with the team in the office this week, that a customer had added a pointless colon into her Call Reference when emailing in which meant that her mail wasn't handled automatically as it should have been.

One of the staff replied back, "what's a colon"?

FFS, just what are they teaching them at school these days?

Good grief. How scary is that? I suppose "semi-colon" produces the same response? To be fair, explaining when & where to use a colon, or semi-colon, is a bit like the Offside Law in football; everybody understands it - but it's well hard to articulate.

PS - I tried a semi there - what's the odds it should have been a full?

PPS - Just thinking about educational standards. Literary standards have never been so bad, or low, but I suppose the children are receiving good education in other - perhaps more relevant? - areas now. IT, for example. Sadly, I'm a bigot here. It's like clean shoes - I tend to initially judge people by such superficial things. Writing skills, ditto. It's wrong, but that's how it is. But given time, I judge them properly & fairly, by conventional yardsticks - like how close together their eyebrows are. Important one that.

Tikay have a look at these great photos of jumping spiders... not the illogically arachnophobic.

Very scary indeed. I understand and accept that language evolves, but written English in a work environment needs to maintain some standards to ensure common understanding, correct delivery of requirements and so on, especially with a multi-national customer base. If people can't do the basics, to put it in the vernacular, we're ****ed!

I work in IT Geo, and proper written English is necessary there as well, especially in support functions. Diagnosis is difficult if people can't communicate well enough to tease out proper information from users, and can't write well enough to translate that into an update that leaves the resolving group clear about what the symptoms are and what's been tried.

There are many new skills compared to when I left school in '82, but reasonable basic literacy is still a core requirement for anyone in an office environment. IMO anyway.
