I've just been watching an episode of the "Three men in a boat" series on TV.
Here's a brief description of the show in the BBC's own words.
BBC TWO has commissioned Liberty Bell Productions to recreate the most popular comic novel of the Victorian era, Three Men in a Boat. Starring Griff Rhys-Jones, Rory McGrath and Dara O'Briain, the trio will row and tow a boat from Kingston to Oxford. Their odyssey will take place in an exact replica of the wooden skiff used by author Jerome K Jerome, George, Harris and Montmorency the dog.
The book was first published in 1889, and the series will follow the original journey as faithfully as the passage of 116 years will allow. They will moor where the original protagonists moored, sleep in the boat where the original characters slumbered, and stay in some of the same pubs and guest-houses.
It's a wonderful, gentle, humorous, educational programme, and a very successful one by all accounts. Already the trio have made two further series. "Three men in another boat" and "Three men in a different boat"
What a great gig to land though. It's like Tony Robbins and "Time Team" Mark Williams with "Industrial Revelations" or Fred Dibnah's "Building Britain" & "World of Steam" etc.
There are loads when you stop to think about it. Programmes where the main protagonist gets paid for doing the thing he enjoys doing most.
What about Palin's "Around the world in 80 days" "Pacific rim" "Pole to pole" Or Ewan McGregor's "The long way round"?
Fabulous programmes, all made so by the sheer enthusiasm of the presenters.

I don't know who he is Ralph, perhaps you can enlighten me?

Antoine de Caunes was the presenter of Rapido, a somewhat tawdry but nonetheless cult TV show.
His infectious enthusiasm made the show compulsive viewing for adult audiences.

"Tawdry"
Absolutely the perfect word to convey your meaning Ralph. You must have the most descriptive vocabulary of anyone I know.
