I think that scrap metal dealing is quite a common thing among the Gypsy community - pretty sure Tom has said he did it back in the day, so it's not that much of a jump if you assume Gypsies are up to no good to link them to copper wire going missing.

But the jump was to assume that if copper wire goes missing, it must be Gypsies.

Isn't that what I said?

If you think that 'something going missing' = prob Gypsies, then 'copper wire going missing' = definitely Gypsies.

I didn't know you were making the assumption that some people think that anything going missing was prob Gypsies.

I think if something goes missing, people don't automatically assume it's Gypsies.  The exception to that seems to be copper wire thieves, which seems to be synonymous with Gypsy thieves.

I had some time to kill this morning waiting for someone so sat with a coffee in the window of starbucks on oxford street next to a couple of policeman listening to their conversation. it went something like this

'so you've had 2 pulls today right?'
'yeah'
'I'll have the next 2 then'
'ok, we'll try and keep it fairly even'

then they spotted a couple of young women crossing the road towards us

'here come some gypsies'
'looks like a couple of pulls'
*finishing drink* 'shall we go and say hello?'

and they popped on their helmets and went outside to stop the girls

Just trying to add a little balance to this:

I'm pretty sure that the London police are likely to refer to all of the recently immigrated Eastern European street criminals, many of whom happen to be from from Romania as "Gypsies" , using that as more of a collective noun than a specific ethnic definition.

Unlucky. Was the 6 max a bit like a rollercoaster without a seatbelt?
