More chippy stories from me:
One of my single fondest memories of working with my dad. I was born is Wigan, and moved to St Helens when I was 7. I tell people I am from St helens as thats where most of my memeories are.
Anyway, it has never ceased to amaze me how two places just 8 miles apart can be so different. The accent difference is almost like another country. Even life attitude is noticably different, which for 8 miles is astounding. Anyway, one day, the following occured.
We always had our packed lunch made by mum, but as we were driving through our old village (in wigan), my dad said "ooooh lets get fish and chips for dinner" (thats lunch to you posh folk)
So we go into chippy
Dad order fish, chips and peas.
Lady picks up tray, picks up pea ladle, about to poor
Dad "whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa" [imagine peter kay you wont be far wrong]....... "peas on top"
Woman "peas on top??!?!?!?!?!?!!??!" ............ "Are you from StHelens"?
I think I almost died laughing that day. It became a family joke for years (still is)............. and in my mind it is now the true definition of the 2 towns!

This is so true. I asked for gravy here in Leicester and the bloke said, "Are you from up North?"

Hunstanton.
I used to go there every year as a child, and I've some fond memories of the place. I wonder what it's like now...
Got an excellent chippie with the worlds best curry sauce.
Not another shop can beat it, but then again "Anythings Possible"
In the "anything's possible", I believe that chippy is owned by a poker player - none other than "Sharky", the geezer who was swimming off the side of a boat near the Australian Coast when his mates all shouted "THERE IS A SHARK RIGHT BEHIND YOU", & he said, obv, "yeah, right", you know, the fella with the huge lump missing from his arm & head.
He owns several similar establishments - cafes, tea rooms, restaurants etc - right up the Lincolnshire Riviera, Skeggy, Hunstanton, Mablethorpe, da de da. Earned a goodly few bob from them down the years, too.

I have to concur that the best Fish and Chip shop is in Hunstanton - Vegas Fish Bar, portion size, quality, taste and amazing curry sauce it has it all.
Obviously IMO but at least its an opinion in which I have some expertease and a huge sample size.
Bought Fish and Chips in Wigan once, took 5 minutes for us to understand each other, barm (sp?) cakes and pea wit WTF is that about, and then when I finally had ordered what I wanted she seemed shocked I didn't want a "Meat and Potato on top".

There is a simple fact of life that Northern Chippies>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>southern chippies! You can obvioulsy refine your arguements from there!
And then that reminds me of, what was quite simply the funniest gag Ive ever heard (watching live comedy). Its funny for several reasons. I was watching pete kay at the Hammersmith Appolo in London (i lived there), wen he told the gag (link below)! I mean the gag itself is funny for us Northerners, but what gave that "rebound laughter" (for about 5 mins), was the fact that there were tiny pockets of people falling about laughing, and lots of other s not really saying "what did he say"
Laugh.............. I almost had to leave.............. (sorry cant embed - ive linked to correct time in clip)

If you drive the A17 en route to Hunstanton, which you likely will from anywhere to the north, stop off at Sleaford.
Take the first road in to the town and look out for Scoffers on the right hand side after about a mile. Takeaway , or cheap n cheerful sitdown, some of the the best fish n chips you'll buy inland.
It's pretty much the only thing that makes the journey to North Norfolk bearable
other than three gorgeous grandkids at journey's end obviously

Where is it? The Fish and Chip shop, that is.
I haven't been to Hunstanton for years, but we used to rent out a bungalow which was literally a footstep outside the bounds of the Searles Leisure and Camping Resort -- so we'd stay there, conveniently owned by a friend of a friend, and enjoy all of the benefits of the holiday camp too. You were a minute away from the sea front, as well. I don't often muse back upon my past, but there's a lot of happy memories attached to Hunstanton. I remember the endless fields of heather that Dad would always insist we stopped off at on the way, and an elderly gentleman that would seem to be in the same pub every time we came for a visit. When he exhaled, it came out as a whistle and I'll forever remember how my parents convinced me it was because he'd swallowed a whistle and it was lodged in his throat. I was never a very gullible child, but they got me with that one and I never did realize they were pulling my leg until my teens.

Vegas F+C is just past Searles - down south beach road, next to the big amusements.
That end of town has changed little in the last 30 years, unlike Searles which seems to change every Summer.
