Two answered, depending where the () should be. 41 or 1.as the questin is formulated either are correct

Nope. In the absence of paraenthese the multiplication is evaluated first.

Answer is 41.

I would totally agree. I can quote my qualifications if it helps settle an argument. Then again, JonMW is the maths grad is he not? Where is the little man when you need him?

Ray, serious question. Did you never learn bidmas/bodmas? I'm baffled as to how you can do even basic maths without a knowledge of this

Probably did, I did A level Maths and was predicted a B lolol, I've forgot quite a lot of stuff since I stopped with full time education though. I actually got a B at GCSE level so I managed alright imo.

Obv in this case it's relevant to a degree but it's pretty ridic how often people say "your an Accountant" when I don't know something that has literally absolutely nothing to do with Accountancy, for instance how to spell something, WTF ?. I am a Management Accountant, I produce a set of Accounts for a company, so much of Maths is useless in the real world, I never come accross a situation where I have to work out 40+40*0+1 = ?, luckily Smiley

I used to be better at Maths when I was 10 than I am now and I was better at spelling when I was 10 then I am now, nevermind.

Something in my head keeps telling me that if there's no brackets then you work along the line, I guess not.

Dawn, you have the same phone as me, it has a proper calculator on that doesn't work out the sum til you've entered all the parts. Bang 40+40x0+1 into it, you'll get 41

See now I just don't get this at all.

To me 40 + 40 = 80.

80 x 0 is still 80

80 + 1 = 81

Simples.

80 x 1 = 80

80 x 0 = 0

If you have zero 80's then the answer is zero. If you have one 80, then you have 80. If you have two 80's then you have 160.

What if you have one 80 multiplied by nothing?

Then its zero, you only get 80 if you multiply it by 1.

Then its nothing, you only get 80 if you multiply it by 1.

So what happens to the 80 that you had before you multiplied it by nothing, i.e. did nothing with it?
