Wonderful!

Thanks David. This kind of thing is right up my street.

I particularly like Ruskin's weather quote.

How nice it is to have a bit of culture on the forum. (Perhaps some of it will rub off on Tony)

But at my back I always hear
Time's winged chariot hurrying near

I've always loved that line. It becomes more poignant with every passing day.

Ruskin was an interesting character - art critic and social thinker. Anti-capitalist 150yrs before it became trendy enough toi camp out for. Possibly over-interested in young girls although the social mores of the time were very different in that respect.

The list of quotations is long, but This one stands out...

THERE IS NO WEALTH BUT LIFE. Life, including all its powers of love, of joy, and of admiration. That country is the richest which nourishes the greatest number of noble and happy human beings; that man is richest who, having perfected the function of his own life to the utmost, has always the widest helpful influence, both personal, and by means of his possessions, over the lives of others

I'm racking my brains for the source of another of my favourite quotes about selling stuff - I'll get back to you.

To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time.

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.

Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry:
For having lost but once your prime,
You may for ever tarry.

Love the first paragraph (although for poems I'm sure I should refer to it as something else).  It is so true, I know personally I miss so many opportunities that I will regret when I'm older.  Need to pull my socks up!

"smooth sea never made skilled mariner."

this is one of my favourites, not sure who said it.

on a nautical theme,

"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea."

is a favourite of mine. attributed often to Antoine de Saint Exupéry, the famous French writer, poet and pilot/aviator who wrote 'The Little Prince' (which i guess lots of parents read to their kids..), but it's unlikely he ever said it. He said something similar, though. Tells you more than you think at first glance about motivation.

Benjamin Franklin's ouote for nits.

Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a big ship.

Benny has plenty of room to talk. He's the original local boy who comes good.
