Dogs, especially small dogs are prone to plaque and tartar build up, particularly those that are regularly fed on canned meat & sugary 'treats' from the table.

I use this.

It comes in gel form and you don't actually have to brush the dog's teeth with it. It works by introducing plaque-fighting enzymes into the dog's saliva, all you have to do is get it into his mouth. The best way to do this is by wiping a tiny smear (The size of a small pea) on to the outside of his muzzle and he will promptly lick it off.

It's fairly expensive, so don't use it as frequently as the packaging suggests. twice a week is enough.

Obviously brushing is a great help, but if you are going to brush your dogs teeth and you want him to cooperate, you have to introduce him to the toothbrush in tiny increments over a long period, or, better still, start when he's a puppy.

I brush Kizzy's teeth about once every month, she's fine with it, but I started her at 6 weeks. She thinks that having her teeth brushed, along with bathing and toenail clipping, is perfectly normal. 


PS- If you want to start your dog on Denta Styx or rawhide chews, wait until he is really hungry before you give him one, and fray it up a little, (Like you would a kindling stick) to release a bit of flavour and make it smell more interesting.

Cheers Red - will give the paste a try. The monster will chew rawhide, but flat ignores the dentastix, months old rabbit carcass gets chewed on happily of course...

By far the best way to keep a dog's teeth clean if you ask me.

Might need something a little smaller for kizzy

I've never cleaned Ronnie's teeth and his are nice and white and his breath is fine.

Rod / Tractor. What food do you use? That's probably a contributory factor.

Yes. It's virtually never a problem with bigger dogs Matt, just the toy breeds.
