Wildlife spotting. When you see something what gives you the buzz?

I get an extra thrill if it's rare, or new to me, or a raptor as I'm a big fan.

But I also get an added thrill depending on location. Seeing wildlife, espacially rare or unusual near where I live adds a lot to it for me. THere's red kites further down the valley & I love to see them, but the first one I see up our end will be a special moment for me.

Another extra buzz is seeing something where you wouldn't expect it. An otter in the river in the middle of a big town, one of the urban peregrines, the roe deer in the necropolis in Glasgow City centre etc.

Anyone else or am I just too into wildlife?

Not just you Rod.  Saw a group of buzzards on my run yesterday flying close to the quarry.  I'm guessing some were juveniles as I haven't seen them in a group like that before.  Shame I was running  otherwise I could have stopped and watched them for ages.

Possibly migrants before they disperse? Buzzards don't all migrate, but they are known to head to lower ground during hard winters. Any of last years aren't really juvenilles as such now, they're back to breed. Either that or there was something nearby they were all feeding on.

Was on a company organised outwards bound in Wales once, had just walked up a steep mountainside & I stopped to look back & there were half a dozen buzzards spiralling up ina thermal below me. Stopped there and watched them till one of the instructors asked if I was OK. I just pointed & he stood with me for 5 and watched them too before we went to catch the group. A fantastic sight. TBF they'd worked out that an outward bound wasn't taking me out my comfort zone. Tickling a couple of trout on the first night sleeping out must have told them that ;-)

I wish people wouldn't ring me while I'm shaving.

Shucks Red - got me blushing... Strange coincidence on another forum this morning they were discussing heroes, and if people had met theirs, and I said how sad I was when Gerald Durrell died, as he'd consistently been the one man I'd most like to meet and talk with. His books were a huge influence on me as a boy & I still kind of regret allowing 'careers advisors' to put me off working with wildlife somehow.

Thanks for the book link - managed to get a used copy on Amazon for less than a fiver Cheesy I'll enjoy reading it.

That, to the best of my knowledge, is the first (And hopefully last) time I've ever heard Motorhead.

Has that lead singer ever tried Strepsils, I wonder?
