One of the most heart-warming stories I've heard was about an old couple who had been together for decades, and decided to go to dignitas to end their lives together, on their terms.
They weren't scared of dying, but were scared of being without the other. They must have had such happy lives.

Boshi. I've been waiting for you to arrive.
Why should we strive to live when death has no downside?

Pizza. They're fantastic. If you're dead you can eat pizza.

Think MrT mentioned that we're programmed through our DNA and our evolution to want to stay alive in order to perpetuate the species.
Other than that, there really is no 'reason' to live other than what we get from it whilst we're here. People choosing where and how they'd like to be buried or their ashes scattered is a strange one for me. If it's for the benefit of your nearest and dearest then fair enough I guess, but the "it's what he would have wanted" notion is a bit daft. Then again, I find the idea of visiting cemeteries or placing flowers where someone was killed very strange as well, as those places usually have absolutely nothing to do with their lives or who they were.

Think a lot depends on your personal beliefs, some people believe in heaven and reincarnation so their physical life has a spiritual purpose greater then their human form, other people think after physical life there's nothing else so they make the most of it.
Most of what happens to us at funerals and services is usually for the benefit of our families, personally when I die I don't want a fuss, I'd just want to be cremated, don't really care about my ashes being spread, I certainly don't want to have flowers at my funeral, not sure why people would. Don't get the whole flowers at roadside thing either...
Hindu funerals are the most moronic rituals I've experienced, when my Uncle/Adopted father passed away; being the oldest son, I had to do all the duties, most of it made no sense, from start to finish it was clearly a contradiction of overall Hindu beliefs, I wouldn't want my son to have to go through the whole thing when I die, so I've explained to my family when I die I just want my immediate family at my cremation, I don't want my Ashes spread in the Ganges as the river has no spiritual relevance to me or any silly rituals where you have to open a dead mans mouth to put a flower in.. F*@$ that...
Red - Interesting question about atoms coming together, is science pushing you towards some sort of spiritual belief again....?

This question has been occupying me for a while.
Why do atheists try to avoid death?
Surely the opposite question is more appropriate - if heaven is so great, why don't religious people kill themselves so they go to heaven today?

I've chosen to take that as a compliment.
Seriously though, the less I play the less I want to play, and vice-versa.

Have you stopped discussing the death option on here yet?
Assuming that you are still with us, when are you off to sunny Spain?

Now given the fact that those atoms are going to float around the cosmos for ever, doesn't the law of averages mean that eventually, they will come together in exactly the same configuration and
become me again?
Double run bad!!!!
