Never realised this was illegal, Tom;

Yes, it's been illegal for ages.

All caged British birds must be aviary bred and have a closed ring placed on the leg not more than five days after hatching to prove it. Our typically convoluted UK law states that it is not illegal to own or to keep a wild bird, but it is illegal to catch one or offer one for sale.

The problem with putting a ring on a hatching lies it the fact that baby birds do little packages of poop that the hen instinctively throws over the side of the nest. Often, she mistakes the ring for a poop package and flings it out with the baby chick attached.

I'd imagine the Zapp family are a kindred spirit for you.

Wonderful photo, wonderful. Even the grinding bike is there.

Where was that taken, Tom? First thought was Wales, but I don't know why. Gorgeous bit of scenery, anyway.

PS - Have you got a pillow stuffed up your jumper?
