Use your money to improve your lifestyle, not your status. Status is the life other people believe you live; lifestyle is the life that you actually live.

Free time is the ultimate status symbol and choice is the grandest lifestyle.

Love this! Also a friend posted this quote on FB and I'd never thought of this before....

People ask you what you do for a living so that they can calculate the level of respect to give you.

Is it time to fib for a bit of fun?

I like to tell people who don't know me at all but ask what I do that I'm an aeronautical engineer. When they ooh and aah I say, "Well, it's not rocket science".

I wanted to install some form of heating in my camper but I didn't want to go down the Eberspacher diesel heater route because they are noisy and need an external exhaust. I like to do a bit of stealth camping and both those things give the game away.

I fancied a gas heater but they give off fumes and cause condensation so they were out too.

Then I lit upon (no pun intended) the the idea of a catalytic heater.

Catalytic heaters have no flame and therefore no fumes and no condensation, they work by mixing fuel, (in my case propane gas) with with a metallic element to cause a chemical reaction which gives off heat.

Problem #1
There are no catalytic heaters available in the UK that are small enough for my needs. They have them in the US but getting one shipped would be a palaver, plus I wanted to see it in the flesh before I bought it.

Luckily I I found this on eBay. It's just the ticket

but  it brings me on to problem #2.

Problem #2 is, they run on Coleman 1lb propane canisters, available at very few outlets for anything between £9 and £10 a pop.

Fek that for a game of soldiers.

BTW- I have it on good authority that the word 'Fek' is of Irish origin and is totally innocuous. "Sure you could ask a nun what the fek she was doing and have a clear conscience".

I buy my propane in 47kg canisters, which work out at ~ around 50p for a lb.

Problem #3.

My 47kg bottles wouldn't fit into my tiny camper, nor would they screw into my heater. So to start I made a pipe that would allow me to transfer propane from my big bottle to a smaller one. (Don't try this at home kids)

Then I removed the Coleman 1lb canister and replaced it with a bit of sewer pipe and made a connection for my 3.9kg propane bottle.

Problem #4.

Surprisingly my 37 millibar regulator didn't supply the correct pressure to run the heater so I had to use an adjustable one from an old gas blow lamp and fiddle about until I got it right.

Why are they precisely 47 kg?

Why are they precisely 47 kg?

I don't know Ralph.

I do know that all the cylinder sizes contain precise, if unusual amounts. For instance, that small cylinder that I used earlier is a 3.9kg.

The actual cylinders themselves vary slightly in weight so each has its empty, or tare weight stamped on it. (In pounds and ounces).

Gas cylinders are refilled by weight so they are put on a scale, the tare is entered into the automated filling machine which then calculates what the gross weight should be when, for instance 47kg of gas has been added.

I don't have automation so I put my empty on the bathroom scales and then add 7lb of gas to my 3.9kg bottle to be on the safe side.

Heating in the camper van?

Tom used to park a little van in the car-park at places like DTD & Grosvenor Cardiff & kip there regularly, no matter what the weather, & never complained of the cold.

Think he's gone soft in his dotage.
