That pic is supposed to be of "The Road Sweeper" He was a legendary Gypsy stallion, so named because his hoof feather swept the ground as he walked.

The Americans have jumped on the Gypsy horse bandwagon. Using unwanted colts and the odd overgrown filly, all proporting to be the progeny of the great horse and bought from Appelby fair or some such at an exorbitant price as a starting point, they are now breeding what they call " "Pedigree (Pedigree ffs) Gypsy vanners"

Some wit recently observed.

"Many of the knowledgeable horsepeople on the Internet have already observed that the currently trendy "Gypsy Vanner" is actually an $400  cart horse from Europe which is imported and sold to dumb Americans who don't know any better. And that, like most drafty types, it's intended use, for which it has been bred for centuries, can be roughly described as "pulling heavy shit"

I have loads of diary stuff to catch up on. The rest of the "Gypsy" negitives, a reply to 77 Dave's question, a story that I've been wanting to write etc...

I will get around to it,eventually.  In the meantime, I spotted this while I was out today. There it is, just standing in a field, miles from anywhere.

Any ideas?

I'm guessing it's stuck in the middle of the field because, and if you look closely you can see this in the photo, it's only got a couple of feet of track at each end to drive along

Tom, had a question for you.

I've been running along the canals in and around Tamworth as part of my training for the London Marathon.  Not many people around, except for some people on the boats and a couple of people walking their dogs here and there.  Anyway, it got me thinking, do Gypsies have any history or tradition of living on or near the water?

Some folks who live on boats like to call themselves Gypsies, as do many other "opt out-new age" type groups. This creates confusion, which is further compounded by the settled community's propensity to label any nomadic group "Gypsy", or, more often, "gypsy".

"No" Is the short answer.

That's why I asked.  I know there are a lot of travellers who opt for life on the river (or canal), but hadn't heard of it being a Gypsy tradition.

Any reason why?  I would have thought it would be a good fit for the way of life?
