Vagueness and the Aftermath - A sporadic diary

My Mum took our little Jack Russell to the vets a month or so back, as she had noticed that she was panting almost constantly, even outside in cold-ish weather, something she hasnt previously done.

The vet said panting is also a way for dogs to cope with pain, they use it as a relief, as she has developed arthritis.

I think that panting as a form of pain relief must work for all species. Animals (and ladies for that matter) pant like mad when giving birth.

It is the first picture I have ever seen which catches a dog positioning it's legs in such a way as to bring it's stoppers in to play.

What about the word "nesh"?

That must be regional midlands, as its a new one on me.

I never once heard that expression in London, but once I moved North, everybody uses it. "feels the cold" I think.

One cannot imagine HRH the Queen-Ness being nesh though, so it's clearly something that only common people say.

I do so love sight hounds. Especially lurchers with a little bull blood in them...  or Bedlington x whippets... or saluki x collie x greyhound....

Great whippet pic btw. My dad has a terrific little whippet named Pal. He was as nesh as a newborn baby and an inveterate thief, but he could do a score of coney on the lamp without breaking a sweat.

So that's all the enboldebed bits explained, except for the bit about not breaking a sweat.

Dogs don't actually sweat, (Apart from via a few glands on the pads of their feet, but that's more about traction than cooling)

Dogs regulate their body temperature by panting. The act of breathing in and out quickly with their tongue lolling cools the core of the dogs body much quicker than sweating through the skin. Sweating only cools the body surface, and it wastes a lot of precious fluids causing rapid dehydration.

Dogs also have special blood vessels in the roof of their mouth which allows the blood going to the brain to be given priory cooling when the dog is hot.

So, you will never see a dog sweating like a pig, (but then again, you will never see a pig sweating either).

Horses, on the other hand, are a different kettle of fish.

Bait taken - tell us more.

My only knowledge in this area is of racehorses, who "sweat up" or get in a lather, pre-race. It's (usually) seen as a very bad sign & affects Stud values enormously, as the horse will not give of it's best if it's a sweater. I assume it's a sign of mental discomfort.

I should point out that I can only claim credit for finding the pic... not for taking it. I did take some nice action pics when we used to race our whippets, but nothing quite as stunning as that one.

Stoppers are the pads at the rear of the 'wrist' of the front legs, adjacent to the dew claw... frequently damaged when running [well, stopping] on hard ground.

It came up with 4 spelling mistakes with capitalisation suggestions, 2 autocorrects and left one as it was.

Any guesses which one? Pretty obvious really.

So even microsoft don't recognise that the word Gypsy should be capitalised.
