Wow Tom. This has been a great read.

Hey, titaniumbean ...
Total time logged in: 1 days, 17 hours and 58 minutes.

That's how long i've been in the thread and how long it took me to read all of the longest posts. Amazed I haven't seen this before. You have a real knack for making the simplest piece interesting.

I really do hope there is a book, it's been very interesting going off on tangents on other websites for 20 minutes at a time then coming back to a quick bit of poker talk and then onto another brain hammering debate about deep rooted and important problems with society. I don't really feel like this post does justice to everything that I have read before especiall considering how much I feel I have learnt.

So yeh thanks!

Will buy you a cuppa at DTD next time I see you.

Oh, it's you! I'm genuinely surprised and, for some reason, a little embarrassed.

Tell you what, I'll buy you a cup of tea.

Hi Red-Dog

Please excuse my ignorance, but i saw a documentary on Gypsy life ( can't remember where ) and in it was an interview with a guy called Paddy Docherty ( ever heard of him? ) The bit i found interesting was the amount of disputes ( business and family ) that were settled by fighting. Clean go's i think they called it.

Is this a true reflection of the Gypsy way of life or more media/television hype?

There was also an interesting piece stating that things have changed dramatically for travelling families and its now more common that more and more Gypsies are staying in permanent communities rather than travelling?

Do you mean the Danny Dyer one?

I'm not sure which one you are referring to then.

Fighting is the preferred method of settling disputes. Well, not so much settling disputes as maintaining face and defending honour.

It's a very difficult thing for me to explain to an outsider. It's the willingness, rather rather than the ability to fight that's important.

That being said, fighting plays a relatively small role in our complex society.

Yes i can see it must be better to turn up and be soundly beaten than not to show at all.

I'll try and think of what the program was called.

By the way what did you think of the Danny Dyer one?

Watched the whole series and still not sure what to make of it.

I suspect, but could be wrong, that there was a small amount of sensastionalism involved!

Also just finished reading one of the best books i ever read - Bartley Gorman - King of the Gypsies. Cracking read.

It was a reasonably accurate reflection, but it was part of a documentry series about the "Deadliest Men" not about Gipsy life per se.
