I thought this would be the best place to post this.

On Sunday when I was out Joo heard a lotof noise out back. When she went to check it out she found a pigeon ripped to bits.

Yesterday while I was at home I think the culprit (sparrowhawk) showed up. I managed to get these snaps the best I could on my mobile.

Thanks to Kev B for the fabulous sparrowhawk pics.

I knew an old Scottish guy who used to fly a sparrowhawk. He asked me to accompany him on a hunting trip once. "C'mon Tom" He shouted enthusiastically, "Ye'll lose yer hat, ye might even lose yer teeth, but ye'll never ha anither thrill like it"

I went along of course, and he was right.

My bird table has had some unusual visitors too. A flock of moorhens, (4 to be exact) and a squirrel with commando training.

My sincere thanks to Iron for untangling all that quiz malarkey from my diary.

Right. This has been bothering me. When a plant (A tree for instance) dies, what happens?

I mean, at what point does it stop being a living tree, and become a dead tree?

If it stops converting, surely it doesn't die instantly. And anyway, wouldn't it stop converting because it was dead, and not the other way round?

Iron's pretty accurate I guess with his answer.  A plant photosynthesises carbon dioxide in the air using the energy in sunlight into organic molecules.  When this process stops, the plant is not longer 'living'.  Of course, plants are able to 'hibernate' for long periods, so an absence of photosynthesis isn't necessarily an indication of the death of the plant - but it could be.  I guess the answer is that there isn't a single moment where it goes from living to dead, there's a grey area.  You can cut a branch or stem of larger plant, and left as it is the branch will die.  But plant it and give it the right nutrients and environment and it will continue to live and grow.  Ain't nature brilliant!

If you didn't see 'Life' narrated by David Attenborough this week, watch it on the iPlayer.  All about plants.  Some stunning camera-work.  The BBC might get a lot wrong, but it does natural history like no one else.

Whatever happened to that horse-story involving the infamous Millie Hot-Lips or whatever her name was ?

And that bloke who used to fart on you in return for letting you win at snooker, whatever became of him ?

Wasn't there a partially-complete super-high-powered air-rifle fable left in suspenders too ?

Time sure does fly but some of us have long memories Smiley
