I can remember every day of those trips as if they were yesterday. I still have the the AMA Plaques somewhere.

Jeez, that was 30 years ago. Where did my life go?

I'm much enamoured by the theory that your brain measures time by new or exciting experiences. that's why, as a child, a summer seems to last forever, but as we age, they seem to fly by.

Frisco is on my bucket list. almost went lasy year but did Germany - Poland -Auschwitz instead. Glad I did though, it was like a pilgrimage.

I'd love to go to SF!

Hire a convertible, & take a drive down the Pacific Highway to San Jose - one of THE best drives in the world.

Not quite the A6 at Whatstandwell, Derbyshire - Tom will know that well - but pretty good.

Now you've got me ruminating on my favourite stretches of road. Go away, I got work to do!

Bet you never knew I've been suffering with some sort of eye-problem for over a week? Don'y worry, plenty of peeps have been nagging me about it, sigh.

Ah well, at least it's only your vision. It could easily have been something important.

Yup. And it's only one eye, too.

Go away, I got work to do!

I was about to post about some photos I saw today of Burton in the old days - what looked like were streets were, on closer inspection, railways - all around the town.

Post them, please!

There are - or were - some wondeful Breweries in Burton-upon-Trent, & I think the Railways were there to serve them.

That won't affect any one-eyed opinions that you might hold then...

There are - or were - some wondeful Breweries in Burton-upon-Trent, & I think the Railways were there to serve them.

They weren't online - they were on the wall of a shop, I was looking at them while the cashier was packing my purchases. It was at the local 'English' shop (which is actually really good). They have 230 types of beer in stock but I doubt more than a handful are local, which is a touch ironic.

Breweries (now Coors) are still a big presence in the town centre and Marstons also have one not far out of the centre, and 2 micro breweries (Burton Bridge and the Brewery Tap at the now re-opened beer museum).

I believe the railways were to do with the breweries and apparently there were 32 level crossings in the town centre (and it's really not that big).

I tried to find a similar picture but all I could find was this:

Which doesn't really show it.

Here's one of the level crossings:

6 of Bass' steam locos:

All of these from the rather excellent site I just discovered:
http://www.staffspasttrack.org.uk/

It has loads of photos of time gone by!

I find it a bit odd to be talking to you about beer - do you ever feel like you're missing out? Not on the alcohol but just sampling the different types of beer and appreciating the different tastes and the skills used to make them (and with whisky - lots of variety there too!)

I know the truck on the other side of the crossing. It's a green 710 D series (Tip cab) Ford with an oak grain double drop side body. (Made by Levers of Bawtry) It belonged to Needles Price.

Up at 07:30 this morning. Switch on heating, (Timers are for sissies) make a brew, settled down to watch so-called "news" programme on TV.

First up, BBC1 "Breakfast" What was their Idea of a cutting edge story? Sticking a strip of tape down the middle of a busy London shopping street with a sign saying "Dawdlers this side, Commuters that side" Reason? To see if it improved the flow of pedestrians.

Tilt!

Switch over to ITV1 "Daybreak" where they explained to me (At great length) how, by phoning this number (Calls cost £1, mobile networks may charge considerably more, get bill payers permission before dialling) I too could have a chance to own a fabulous Ford Fiesta.

Tilt!

Switch TV off, stare out of window at bird table.
