Celtic said earlier, "Diary is turning more and more into mine everyday".

I almost replied "No it isn't, my diary doesn't have all that Scottish football crap"

and yours has had at least one fact posted on it. shame it was about cow pats

as for rule of thumb, looks like my deputy em dubya is on the case

Don't you think it 'sounds' like  a phrase that was invented with measurement in mind rather than adapted to mean it?

yeah, probs. is it one where we don't know where it came from? I know there's no evidence of the popular belief about it being a court ruling

No one told me about their EDC (Every Day Carry) either Jon, and I'm genuinely interested.

Nobody Knows

But it's nothing to do with any law - the same phrase is in so many diverse countries that it has to really be something that can be independently thought of - e.g. like to do with measuring things

You'd like the atmosphere at a rugby (league or union) match Tom.  Fans all mix with virtually no trouble, you can take drinks to your seat, families can go and enjoy the day out together, etc.

I'm probably going to regret asking this, but what's the difference between league and union?

League is played with 13-a-side, Union with 15.  Fundamental rules are the same, you score points for placing the ball on the ground behind the opposition's goal-line or by kicking the ball through the posts, however the points system is slightly different across the two codes.  League is the one with '6 tackles' in which you try and score (or get good field position), otherwise you 'handover' the ball to the opposition.  In Union, you don't have to handover the ball to the opposition after any number of tackles.

In the UK, League is popular in the North of England, with Wigan, St Helens, Leeds, Warrington, Hull, Bradford being some of the well-known clubs - and it's also popular in Australia.  Union enjoys greater nationwide coverage, and across the world in general, especially when the national teams are playing.  When you see England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland playing rugby on telly, it's usually Union (England are playing New Zealand tomorrow in a League match, but this will get far less media coverage than the Union internationals).

Usually, people favour one code over the other and will argue the merits of the sport they follow over the other.  I keep telling Jack that League is a better game, but he still doesn't get it... Wink

Can't wait til Jack reads that.  He's so funny when his knickers are in a twist.

No he doesn't.  That's why he's currently twisted.  The rugby thing will just add icing to the cake.

I'm going to be adult about this.

Union is the original, League stemmed from a breakaway around the turn of the last century. When Union was amateur and League was pro, League was the tougher game played by fitter (& probably harder) individuals. Since the advent of the professional era, Union and the people that play it, has come on in leaps and bounds, at least in terms of fitness.

I've been brought up on Union and will always think it's the better, more elegant sport. But I'm 47 now so each to their own.

Oh.

Nearly forgot...
