In simple terms, no more than 4 1/2 hrs in a stretch, generally up to 9hrs a day, occasionally a maximum of 10.
No more than 48 in a week, and no more than 90 in a fortnight.
Minimum daily rest of 9hrs, generally it's 11.
There's more, but that's the synopsis. Not much has changed, other than the fact that tachographs are digital these days, so the option of discarding the first three hours of the day and starting afresh has gone.

Lol. I used to put a disc in while the cop was getting out of his car.

Just been out with the dog into what Scotland has dubbed Hurricane Bawbag & saw the most amazing flying display by a kestrel treating the storm winds as its own personal transport service, it hardly flapped a wing, angling just so to stay stationary, then turning on a wing-tip to fly with the wind, gaining amazing speed then dipping into the quarry or the railway cut (where presumably it's a bit more sheltered), and using that speed to whizz back up to near where it started, hanging stationary above another bit of the field scanning for prey.

I love the raptors Rod.
When I go up on Croft hill, I often see a kestrel hovering at my eye level, just a few feet from my face.
He knows he's safe because the ground that separates us falls away almost vertically. If I were to move toward him, I would go down 10ft for every 1ft I moved forward so I would end up 40ft below him.
It's strange to watch him turn his head as he scans the ground. Sometimes he even looks back over his shoulder.
There's a pair of peregrines that nest at Croft too. I've never managed to get that close to them. but I have seen them through a friendly twitcher's telescope.
I've seen one take a bird in flight too, sometimes they scream as they stoop. Probably from sheer exhilaration.

Don't know if you'd heard anything about this Red.
Quote
.People attending a conference of the Irish Travellers Movement in Britain were barred from entering the Coronet pub, a Wetherspoons establishment, next to the Resource Centre in Holloway Road where the conference was held. Even a police inspector who had spoken to the conference was prevented from entering with other people who had attended the conference. People who had been at a completely different event at the Resource Centre were barred because they were suspected of having attended the Travellers conference. Apparently this was a CORPORATE decision by Whetherspoon's centrally after they heard that this conference was taking place.
The Travellers Solidarity Network invites you to an event NEXT FRIDAY 9th DECEMBER at 5pm outside the Coronet on Holloway Road to show what we think about this racism. Bring yourselves, your voices, banners, placards and musical instruments!
The Coronet is about 100 yards East of the junction with Tollington Road and about half a mile west of Holloway Tube Station (Piccadilly line). Buses: 43, 271, 153, 4, 29, 91, 253, 259.

There were lots of people present, barristers, ministers, police officers, members of the press etc, who were quite sceptical about the extent of the prejudice against Gypsies & Travelers. They changed their minds when they found themselves barred without reason.
It was wonderful.
The Irish Traveller Movement will be taking legal action. They have a good case, and for once, their witnesses are impeccable.

A big mistake by Wetherspoons then. Were you there Red? (I know you're not an Irish Traveller, but you seem to be involved in a lot of these meetings).

Terrible that it happens, but you can't buy PR like that!! Didn't see an article in the Daily Mail about it though...

No I wasn't Rod. I had an invite but had to be elsewhere.
I would have loved it though. Apparently, the Travellers, who are used to this sort of thing, retired to the car park for a chat and a smoke while the great & the good demanded to see the management but were held back by two stony-faced bouncers who had been drafted in at short notice,
"Let me in, I'm the chief of police"
"Yeah yeah, and I'm the Queen of Sheba"

LOL!!
Some of my mates in London are fairly active Irish Republican Lefties - and the pub have opened a can of worms cause the boys are not happy about it. That's where I saw it - the call is out for a protest - also a high proportion of their customers are Irish - if the boycott gets called they'll lose out financially too.

I'll tell you what it is today. Cold! That's what it is.
The thermometer says it's 5c but it feels much colder.
As my mates wife would say in her raspy, Arthur Mullard voice, "It's dat wind tractor wot's makin it so cold"

Tom,
I was thinking about this the other day, how is your caravan in the bitter cold? I really cant imagine! (well i can and i dont like it!)
Have you carried out any modiifcations? How do you deal with all the condensation? Do you have any external wind barriers? Can you insulate it any better.
I know that you are a practical chap but i guess that there is only so much you can do. Any little tricks you care to share.
We have a plot of land in Scotland with a caravan on, but i have never gone in the winter (for obv reasons), but i actually think it would be the best time to go!

There are 2 types of caravan (And mobile home) Guy, tourers, intended for summer excursions and mild weather use, and 'living vans' made for all year round, full time use.
Living vans are fully insulated and have central heating and double glazing. Condensation is not a problem because they are well ventilated.
Even touring caravans are OK in winter if you are lucky enough to have a modern one.
All that being said, in the old days when we had horses and wagons, the women folk and younger children would sleep inside the wagon while the men and older boys slept beneath it, with a tarp wrapped around the wheels to provide some shelter from the wind.
Back then though, most houses didn't have double glazing or central heating either. Comfort is a relative concept.
Even today, with all mod cons available to me, I never heat my caravan at night, (I wouldn't be able to sleep) and I go outside as soon as I get up whatever the weather. It's an old habit from back when you had to make space for the women to put the beds back, get washed and start breakfast.
