A few years ago we found a headless pigeon on the lawn and the next day I captured a quick pic of the culprit on the bird table. I'll go and find it.

Wow! A peregrine. I've seen one at Croft quarry but only in the distance.
Great pic.

Talking about dead animals, a couple of years ago the wife woke me up at 6:30 to tell me one of the kids rabbits was dead on the lawn. When I went out side to remove before the kids awoke, it's head and front legs were missing.
The following morning at the same time a leg and the head were in the exact same spot. On the third day the remaining leg was deposited.
It felt like we had a mafia fox leaving a message.
Not sure why it happened like this but assumed that the fox was maybe teaching it's young??

Maybe the fox heard that rabbit's feet were lucky. So he took them home to his missus, and she told him to stop being so superstitious - so he brought them back?

Could be a cat, or perhaps a bird of prey.
Are there any trees overhanging that spot?

I don't think trees did it.

Perhaps not. Their bark is worse than their bite....

Oh wow, incredible photo Tom!
Not really. It's a little out of focus and I don't like fussy conifers the background. I did enjoy taking it though.
5 cleverclog points to the first person to guess why we named him Floyd.
Tom - the conifers would give a great background to the shot if they were really blurrily out of focus, you need an SLR really....
More seriously, and forgive me if i'm teaching granny to suck eggs, but the whole thing would be great if you just get the camera to focus it's focus on Floyd. Pretty sure you can do this with the camera you have, generally by half depressing the shutter button till it focusses as you want it, then keeping it held while you compose the shot.. That way you get Floyd in fine, feathersharp focus and the conifers as a green background

I had the AF set to one central point Dave, but the shot was hand-held at the full extent of my zoom (x12).
Floyd is pretty difficult to keep in the centre of the frame at that distance, and the trees are only about 18in behind him so easy to focus on them instead.
I do have a manual focus option which I might try for this situation, and I also have aperture priority - shutter priority - full manual modes so plenty to play.
What I would like with this shot is less depth of field, but I don't know if that's possible when we're talking 18in over ~25/30ft?.

Just had a bit of a play with the manual focus option, it's a bit fiddly so no good for quick snaps but should be OK in the sort of situation (Like the bird table) when I have time to pre-focus.
Right. Someone talk to me about reducing depth of field.

Tom,
When I said "incredible photos", the photographic quality never crossed my mind - it's just sheer envy that you have such an amazing set up there, with such beautiful birds "eating out of your hand" almost. I'm staggered.
