Wouldn't disagree with any of that Tom. However it doesn't say that you lose image information when you make a copy. It's when you edit the image and re-save that loss will occur.

True Jack, but as I read it, that's what it seems to imply.

I don't care either way. As Woodsey says, It won't make a difference for what I'm doing. I would like to know now though, just out of curiosity.

You already use picasa Tom, why not use there web albums facility and store them there? Its very easy to synchronise them between pc and web albums too.
You can store a massive amount for free and just buy extra space if you need it.

Cough...

This seems like an eminently sensible solution Matt.

Do you store stuff on there?

I don't think it is implying that you lose image information when you move or copy the file in Windows.

If you use JPEG as your primary image format, just be aware of these facts.

JPEG is a "lossy" format, which means that it permanently throws away image data from compression algorithm losses as you select higher levels of compression.

You cannot use JPEG to manipulate an image more than once or twice before it degrades to an unusable state.

Every time you modify and resave a JPEG image, it loses more data.

May not be as sharp out of the camera as TIFF or RAW modes, due to initial camera compression.

The bold bits are operations carried out within your image editing software (whatever it be). Moving or copying a file in Windows Explorer WILL NOT lose further data.

If you're only using your images on the screen (i.e. not printing them out), then outputting them as JPEGs isn't going to make a significant difference to you. If you're looking to print them, then it could be better to have the original files without any compression (you can always save as a JPEG for us on the web/screen, but you always have the unmolested original if you want to print it sometime down the line.

isn't that the relevant part? Sounds exactly what Jack said doesn't it?

Those are my three favourite words Matt.

Actually, that's a lie. My three favourite words are 'More pie Tom?' but I digress....

I'm off to look at opening a picassa account.

Yes it does.

This seems to confirm it.

Think we should start a blonde camera club thread in the lounge, maybe with a weekly or monthly theme and we should all try and post one image a week/month based on that theme and then we can critique the images and hopefully improve? Maybe vote for the best image each month and the winner then sets the theme for the next month?

In for that, not every week though, couple of time per month maybe.

Matt, do I have to sign in to my google account to create/view my picassa web album?

I don't ever sign into google any more because when I do it it 'Synchronises' with my phone diary and I lose all my appointments and stuff.
