The hook-and-loop fastener was invented in 1941 by Swiss engineer, Georges de Mestral[2][7][8] who lived in Commugny, Switzerland. The idea came to him one day after returning from a hunting trip with his dog in the Alps. He took a close look at the burrs (seeds) of burdock that kept sticking to his clothes and his dog's fur. He examined them under a microscope, and noted their hundreds of "hooks" that caught on anything with a loop, such as clothing, animal fur, or hair.[5] He saw the possibility of binding two materials reversibly in a simple fashion if he could figure out how to duplicate the hooks and loops.[2][8]. This inspiration from nature or the copying of nature's mechanisms (called bionics or biomimesis) is viewed by some like Steven Vogel[9] or Werner Nachtigall[10] as a key example. |

A quick bit of googling reveals that it was true. Apparently the plant those sticky bobs come from is the Burdock.
Some Swiss geezer was out walking his dog and loads of the little bleeders got stuck to the pair of them.
A quick look under a microscope gave him all the inspiration he needed.

Always best to take a bunch of the same pics with different settings if your trying to do that, tripod required too really. |
