Fire lighting without matches or a lighter is really hard. I've tried various methods and failed more times than I've succeeded.

I've managed it a couple of times with a bow drill but I wouldn't like to have to rely on it in a life or death situation.

I stopped smoking 12 years ago, but I still carry a small plastic piezo lighter everywhere.

Are you planning on getting marooned on a desert island on your way home from DTD or summat?  Grin

Anything else you always carry?

About 35 years ago found a Swiss Army knife lying in the street. After having it for about a year, I lost it again and found that I couldn't do without it.

So, I went to buy a new one and was flabbergasted to learn that they cost £30, which was more than I earned most weeks. (They cost about £50 now, so relatively much cheaper)

I missed it so much, so I saved my pennies up and bought one, I've carried it every day since and I use it all the time.

If it breaks for any reason (Including taking it into the shop and hitting it with a sledgehammer) They will replace it free of charge. I have broken mine three times over the years and always got a no-quibble replacement.

Well you did ask.....

Teenage Mugger:                   [flicks open switchblade] And your wallet!
Sue Charlton:                         [guardedly] Mick, give him your wallet.
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee:  [amused] What for?
Sue Charlton:                         [cautiously] He's got a knife.
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee:  [chuckles] That's not a knife.
[he pulls out a large bowie knife]
Michael J. "Crocodile" Dundee:   THAT's a knife.

I bet most people who have that knife use it for killing themselves after watching that video.

Native Americans obviously didn't have the technology to produce high grade steel, but they knew it when they saw it. They used discarded rasps and files to make beautiful hunting knives. I watched a demonstration once, it was amazing.

I would love to have a go. it's on my bucket list.

Cheers Guy.

I would love to have a go.

When I was a boy I used to go into a brick yard er...   outside of office hours and borrow a piece of re-enforcing bar. Then I would use their electric guillotine to cut it to length and fashion a point.

I remember my Grandad saying as he looked for a can to fetch some petrol in, "Jesus Christ! Is there nothing left around here that isn't riddled with fucking spear-holes?".

Some beautys there Red, old files are in high demand for blademaking as they used a better steel than the cheaper modern rasps.

A good start with knifemaking is to buy a blade and fit the handle yourself (needs less tools) - although you might have the right tools in your shed. I'm partway through rehandling a couple of different ones.

BTW the knife pictured above is a pushdagger, seriously illegal in the UK. If you do make one - don't make it like that.

Our knife laws are ridiculous. They're a knee jerk reaction that restrict the freedom of the lnnocent while not inhibiting the guilty in the slightest.

In general I agree - they're made by city-dwellers to deal with city-dwellers - criminalising decent people as a by-product. But the only real use for a pushdagger is to stab - the grip they offer makes them uncomfortable for other uses.

I've got an every-day carry which is legal - but if I forget to take it out of my pocket when going to the football, or in the case of a lawyer going into a court with his swiss army knife who was prosecuted, I could land in serious trouble.

I've got a Leatherman Wave multitool which I bought in the states 15 years ago for $45,it's the best thing i've ever bought. The money I have spent on work tools over the years makes me cringe and most of it sits in my locker gathering dust, whereas I use my Leatherman several times a day.

apologies for lack of news on things girlie.  following my brief strike, I've been struck down with a crappy cold over the last couple of days.  any sympathy gratefully received.  it's nearly as bad as man flu I think.

anyway, I got to watch some daytime telly today and, being a girlie, obviously decided to partake of a little Loose Women at lunchtime.  There he was, the man who, aged 15, I convinced myself I was going to marry.  A ouija board even confirmed this and we were to have 7 children (I may have been slightly influencing the ghostly movements).  I give you Joe McIntyre from New Kids on the Block.  Swoon.

As a teenager I was somewhat obsessed.  My bedroom walls and ceiling were literally covered in pictures of Joe.  Been rooting around to see if i have any pics and this was the best I could find (my two younger cousins, now in their late 20s).  You get the general idea.  That's a small corner of a big room.

Joe was appearing alongside some geezer that was in the backstreet boys (a little bit after my time), to plug their forthcoming joint tour of the UK.  Girlies everywhere - prepare!
