It seems that anyone can just open a business in Albert Square. No planning permission, knowledge, money, or effort needed.
For the purposes of ridicule, I'm trying to work out how many there are. I'm estimating at least a dozen.
Cafe.
Chippy.
Pub.
Hairdressers.
Garage.
Mini-Mart.
Car pitch.
Post office.
Night club.
Street market.
Indian restaurant.
B&B
Gym.
Charity shop.
'McClunkeys' fried chicken shop.
Have I missed any?

Tom
Did you read or hear about the case of the Travelling family from near Leighton Buzzard that this week were convicted this week of forcing destitute men into slavery?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9392950/Traveller-family-guilty-of-forcing-homeless-men-into-slavery.html
This is incredible stuff in this day and age isn't it? and completely irrelevant, in a sense, whether the family is from the Travelling community or not, if they are goin to treat fellow humans like this?

Their actions are terrible and unjustifiable, but the fact they're Travellers is largely irrelevant to the story. Somehow, it's become the headline.

They are described as a family of travellers, which I assume they are, how would you like them to be described?
If it was a family from Edinburgh I would expect the headline to say "Edinburgh family"
If it was the family of a pop/sport star I would expect the headline to say "pop/sports star's family"
If it were a Chinese family I would expect the headline to say "Chinese family"
Or have I missed something?
If I seen a headline of "Soldier leads gang forcing men into slavery" I don't think, oh ffs, everyone is going to think all soldiers do that sort of thing and I don't believe many other intelligent people do either.

Yes. I heard about it. Dreadful story.
I feel like I should make the distinction between Gypsies and Travellers here, but as you say, it's irrelevant.
Re Geo's point, I think it
is
relevant to describe them as Travellers because they are. What I mean is, it's irrelevant who did it, it's still just as abhorrent.

I'll tell you what is surprising though, I was given an enforcement notice that had been served upon a Gypsy family in Derbyshire.
The relevant paragraph, (Presumably drawn up by the legal department) stated that,
"It is illegal for gypsies and travellers to park their caravans on this grass verge".
I will be writing to that particular planning authority to ask if it is also illegal for anyone else to park their caravan, or is it just Gypsies and Travellers?
