House Sparrow

See what I did there?

Actually, no, I don't know what you did there, except to take what I think is a cracking photo.

Lovely!

You know all that stuff I had to do yesterday? I didn't do it. I drove 200 miles to Durham to look at a motor vehicle instead.

The common fault with this particular motor vehicle is rot on the doors and bulkhead.

"Look" I sad to the bloke on the phone, "I won't buy it if it has rot on the doors or the bulkhead. It's a 400 mile round trip, so tell me honestly please, does it have rot on the doors or the bulkhead?"

"No it doesn't." He said emphatically.

Guess what I found when I got there? WTF is wrong with people these days?

You know all that stuff I had to do yesterday? I have to do it today now, along with today's stuff.

I have to admit, (annoyance at peoples inability to answer a simple, direct question honestly aside) I had a great day yesterday. A nice peaceful drive, watching the world go by, imbibing large draughts of radio 4, seasoned with liberal dollops of radio 5.

Excellent.

Sigh...

It's a house sparrow. The photograph shows both house, and spar... Oh never mind.

Good presenters they have on radio 5 BTW. Very bright and accomplished without being condescending, stuffy or pompous.

Spent a lot of time laughing at themselves.

I see edgascoigne is reading my diary.

I don't really know edgascoigne very well, but I like the relationship he has with his dad.

I don't know why really. It just cheers me up.

You missed a trick theere Tom. On a long drive, try listening to Test Match Special (Radio 4 Long Wave). TMS is an institution, & you would love it.

Yes, it's about cricket, but no, it does not matter. TMS is like a blonde thread - it always wanders off-topic, & wonderfully so.

Have a read of this.

It features cakes. Yes, cakes.

Damn you with that House Sparrow.

Bricks are used for other things than houses you know. It is a House Sparrow, not a Brick Sparrow.

I would expect a woman to equate "bricks" only with "houses", not you.

What?

Was Nicky Campbell, Lord Condescending himself, not on yesterday?

I'm outa here, you are revving me up into rant mode.

Have a good day.

I don't understand cricket. So I always turn it of, but reading that it seems as if I have, as you say, "Missed a trick".

I was rolling about reading some of the stuff in that link. So quintessentially British.

Oh No. Not Nicky Campbell. He must have been elsewhere. I can't be doing with him myself.

BTW- I'm doing a disconcerting amount of agreeing with you this morning. Hurry up and say something stupid.

Exactly.

Cakes, beards, red buses, pigeons, trains, & general waffle all feature. Sometimes, cricket, too.

And here's the thing with TMS. It produces its best stuff, its golden moments, when it is rained off, & there is no cricket to talk about. They have hours to fill, & its quality waffle.

Strange but true.

Great characters too. Blowers - posh, very posh, "I say old chap", Tuffers, common cockney geezer, Aggers - one of the best radio voices & personalities you will ever hear, Sir Geoffrey "my granny could hit that if tha were playing wi a stick of rhubarb for a bat", & of course CMJ, who I find a bit boring.

Back in the day the they had the greatest ever, in John Arlott, Fred Trueman, & my favourite of all, Trevor Bailey. Trevor reminds me of Karabiner actually, dry, laconic, clever, & achingly funny.

Just made a 'what I can find in the fridge' sandwich and it's a doozy.

2 slices wholemeal.

I slice roast ham

1 handful baby leaf salad

2 cherry toms

Sliver of onion

Last of the sweet chilli sauce.

Small sachet of leftover Caesar dressing.

Ground black pepper.

Salt.
