The horse.


I have an old container in the field. I use it for storing old car parts, Mrs Red's car boot stuff and various other rammel.

The horse has the entire field to stand in, but she stands directly in front of the container door. She could stand by any other part of the container and things would be hunky dory, but she insists on standing in front of the door.

Why does that matter? I hear you ask, well I'll tell you. For a start it makes a huge muddy patch that I have to wade through every time I want to get in there.

Secondly, she scratches her arse on the corner of the door and it's weakening the structure. Sometimes she manages to shake her booty in such a way as to cause the door to pop open. When this happens, she strolls inside and tramples all over everything.

Last week two blokes came to buy the seats that I took out of the van when I converted it into a camper and I had to explain why they had hoof prints on all over them.

I decided it was time to deploy one of these.....












A nice, single-strand electric fence.


Now we would find out who was the boss!

My electric fence energizer looks like this. It takes two 1.5 volt batteries, has an on off switch and an indicator light to let you know that it's working.

But, while I was in the process of erecting the fence, I left the horse and the equipment together unattended while I answered a call of nature.

She spent that time stamping on the energizer box, and now it looks like this. .

You have to strap the batteries in, it has no on off switch, and, worst of all, no indicator light to let you know that it's working...

love the idea of the horse being such a character! though you do have a way of telling stories that give off that impression with animals alot.

Well the way to test if an electric fence is working without getting a heavy jolt is to find a poor conductor (A blade of grass is great) Touch the wire with the grass and move your hand closer and closer until you feel a tingle. Then you know that the power is on.


When I was trying to put my energiser back together, I couldn't work out which way the batteries went in because the battery cover was shattered into a million pieces.

I had 4 options.

- & - up

+ & + up

-  & + up

+ & - up


At each attempt, I used the piece of grass method to test if it was working, but in truth I wasn't careful enough because I thought the entire thing was broken and wouldn't work anyway.

By the time I got to testing the 4th and final configuration I was very blasé about how I tested it. and my grass was much too short.



















It was nasty, but it could have been much worse.

Although the batteries are only 1.5 volts each, making a total of 3 volts, they charge a capacitor which stores the energy up and then releases it all at once in a fraction of a millisecond. The effect is spectacular, but luckily, my bit of grass saved me from getting the full blast.

I finally got the electric fence up and running, but I felt a little guilty about it because now that the door of my shed was out of bounds, the horse had lost her make-shift bum scratcher.


I decided to make her a proper one.

Satisfied with my days work, I left the field and went in for a cup of tea.

When I went back to check on things, I found to my amazement that the horse was on the wrong side of the wire, happily scratching her arse on my shed.


I've worked out what happened now of course. While I had the wire down to allow me to run back and forth with the scratching post and tools, she must have wandered over to the other side, and when I put the wire back up, I didn't notice.


At the time I just assumed that the power was off and grabbed the wire.

This one really hurt, but again I was lucky. I was wearing my working boots they and they have thick rubber soles, so I wasn't properly grounded.

My under-crackers will need a boil wash though.....

I hurt my back digging in the scratching post and I couldn't bend properly for a couple of days. That meant that when I went into the horse field, I couldn't duck under the wire properly.

Now I know what you're thinking, but I'm not that daft. Instead of trying to duck under, I crawled on my hands and knees. (Plenty of clearance that way see?)


Everything was fine, until I put my hand on a wasp mid crawl. (Karma)

It didn't actually sting me, but it buzzed under my hand and I naturally jumped up.

This time I was well grounded, and I got the full Monty.

I won't say how powerful it was, but if I had been crawling at precisely 88 MPH and carrying a flux capacitor, I would now be in 1955 visiting Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown.
