I am pretty sure you have answered this before Tom but what are the horses that are traded at Appleby used for these days Tom?  Do they have a practical purpose or are they just, for want of a better word, status symbols?

It's complicated, but all these words apply to a greater or lesser degree.

Status, heritage, culture, nostalgia, investment, currency...

I wrote about it here, mostly on page 2 & 3 but page 1 is worth a look for context.

I do love photographs, and It's so easy to take one these days, what with camera phones and all, so with that in mind, I'm considering starting a photo diary.

I don't suppose it would be of much interest to anyone but me, it would just be a simple snapshot and a couple of lines of text to remind me of the day in years to come.

I have no real idea if it will work out, or even if I will like it or stick with it, but I think I'd like to try.

My question is this. Should I do it here, on my sporadic diary, should I start a new thread so that it's easier for people to ignore what, let's face it, will be mostly a load of bland photographs and mundane drivel, or should I k ep it off blonde altogether, say in a word document or something?

Example, yesterday's entry would have been something like..

Mrs Red & I had our vaccinations for India today. Not sure if we're actually going yet cos we're a bit scared and we haven't worked out the costs, but best to be prepared.

I've been thinking summore.

Now I know I asked for opinions, but I don't really like the thought  of two separate diaries. It was a stupid idea, I won't know what to put where, and as sure as eggs is eggs,  one diary or tuther will be doomed to die a slow & painful death.

I think I might just try adding my daily pic diary post to this thread. Surely it won't stand out too much amid the rest of the drivel, and that way I can also c&p it to another doc in preparation for my dotage.

Might be of interest . . .

Whilst showing off the latest batch of daughter photos round the office a colleague mentioned her husband was a budding photographer, currently going through a black and white phase (has had a couple of pics published in photography mags) she was happy to share a FLICKR account;
https://www.flickr.com/photos/markhewlettphoto/  some awesome photos.
sadly it just highlights how poor I am with a camera.

Cracking pics.

B&W is a great medium, and much underused these days. You can really convey the atmospheric aspects of your photographs in monochrome.

It's a wonderful story. We should show our appreciation to these guys, record their stories etc while we still have the chance. They won't be around forever.

Dear diary.

Today I was mostly taking the rubbish to the tip, or 'recycling' as they call it these days.

Then I was adjusting the derailleur gears on my bike in preparation for the fathers day bike ride.
