Pretty sure I'm not getting 5 thru with my landlord anyways, will defo blag him to have 1 though.

They look like Pomeranian puppies Mond, a toy breed that became popular because they were often part of Royal households.

They are great little characters and made an ideal pet for someone who doesn't get out much, they can get all the exercise they need in a one room flat. (Mind you, if put to the test, they will outlast all but the fittest athletes).

Watch out for small dog problems, like being undershot or overshot, slipping patella etc. (check parents).

Not sure there was any need for that, but a proper high quality rub, wp wp.

What I mean is, breeders can cross members of the dog family until they produce one that is 100 times bigger than the other. We can't vastly alter the size and shape of cats.

A simplified explanation from the web. (I'm not suggesting that you need it to be simplified, but I do)



Dogs have what is considered a "slippery genome". This allows for mutations at a much faster rate than your average animal such as a cat. The increased amount of mutations ends in a higher percent of functional mutations (most mutations end in termination of the fetus or cell) This in turn increased the viability of selectively breeding to preform specified tasks. Additionally dogs are able to read into the body language of humans far better than cats making them more trainable to preform specified tasks thus further increasing the desire to selectively breed.

Mutations are the key behind the vast majority of all physiological differences in all species. Think of DNA as the binary code for life. While binary code uses a series of 0's and 1's to make symbols DNA uses a the bonding of the base pairs of nucleotides to identify amino acids which are then sequenced to build proteins. Most mutations in DNA are negative because they interfere with the sequence in such a way that the code for body essential proteins are damaged. In most cases cells with mutated DNA will self destruct or repair the damaged DNA itself. If the mutated DNA is on a sex cell chances are the resulting embryo will self abort due to missing an essential protein. However sometimes the protein isn't really that important.

For example; Take melanin the key element for pigment in skin, eye and hair color in humans. Barring social customs you are not going to die if your body doesn't make it very well, you will just have a lighter skin tone. However is the mutation altered the way a more essential body process functioned such as hemoglobin production (bonding oxygen to blood cells) the fetus would not survive outside the mother's womb. The two most common types of mutations are point mutations and frame-shift mutations. Imagine the sentence as specific gene or DNA code for a protein and the 3 letters are code for specific amino acids.

Now if a single pair gets altered as would in a point mutation it would alter one letter so you would get:

The protein is mostly the same, possibly still functional. This gene is altered but most importantly it didn't damage any other genes. This is the type of mutation that causes color blindness in humans. The other type of mutation is frame-shift caused by insertion or the deletion base pair causing all others shift to fill the gap so you still have the three nucleotides to identify a specific amino acid.

THE CAT ATE THE RAT minus the T in CAT turns to: THE CAA TET HER AT(?) <----because of the need for 3 nucleotides to code for an amino acid this gene pulls one from the next gene. This in most cases totally destroys the other gene and potentially many other genes further down the DNA sequence. This in turn messes up the synthesis of multiple proteins and often has more detrimental effects, these types of mutations are almost always fatal if the pregnancy does not self abort. Tay-sachs is an example in humans.

Dog's are unique because their genes contains repeat DNA so that if a mutation occurs and would result in the loss of an important protein the dog DNA has a back up copy so it wouldn't have to go without. This also allows for dogs to survive frame shift mutations more readily and thus get a series of gene alterations at once without fatal consequences. Therefore it is easier to see greater diversity over a short period of time.

Dogs DNA repeats so that this allows for a bit of a safety net for detrimental DNA errors. Simply put dogs are better at mutating so that is why we see such variation. While dogs have been domesticated for 10k+ years selectively breeding them didn't start until mankind adopted agriculture and even then was only limited. Dogs have seen a vast explosion of diversity in the last 300 years when breed development became cool in upper middle class Victorian culture. As a result the majority of modern dog breeds are based in Europe.

I was just updating my photo diary, (Great fun btw, everyone should do one) and I noticed that I haven't played a hand of poker, live or online. since Aug 14. That's almost a month.

Today one of my daughters had an appointment at Rugby hospital for minor surgery. There were no proper instructions on the appointment letter so before leaving I rang them and they said "Just report to reception when you get here".

When we arrived we went through the doors marked 'Day Surgery'. The place was deserted save for man at a desk behind a glass partition just near the entrance.

"Hello, is this reception please?"

"No".

"Where is reception?"

"There isn't one" replied the bloke, and he went back to his newspaper.

"Oh" I interrupt him again nervously, We're here for day surgery, could you tell us where we should go please?"

"Take a set on the blue chairs".

"OK thanks".

A few minutes later another chap arrives.

"Hello, is this reception please?"

"No".

"Where is reception?"

"There isn't one". (Goes back to paper)

"Oh. I'm here for day surgery, could you tell me where I should go please?"

"Take a set on the blue chairs....."

I swear to you that this exact same scene played out at least 20 more times over the course of the next hour. Eventually I started asking new arrivals if they were here for day surgery and inviting then to take a seat on the blue chairs.
