Definitely more info and pictures please, at least give us a name. I am somewhat surprised that you would buy a dog, I would have had you down as a man with so many connections that you would just be given them.

What is life as a dog like in your family? Would she be purely a pet or is there an expectation of work when trained?

Cockerpoos are the Nuts when it comes to dogs in my opinion, I might be a bit biased as we have one.

Unless you are using your dog for a specific purpose, i.e. coursing, herding, guarding etc then I have to agree. They seem to fit well into virtually any situation.

Although they are a crossbreed, you do have to make sure that you know exactly what is in there though.

Poppy (My bitch) is an F1. her dam is a smallish golden show-type cocker with a fantastic temperament. If I were buying a pure bred spaniel, I would go for a working strain, but I like the more placid nature of the show type when crossed with the more extrovert poodle.    

Poppy's sire is a tac-shap apricot toy poodle. (the kind you often see doing tricks in circuses) He's such a great little character, she couldn't have better genes.

What is life as a dog like in your family? Would she be purely a pet or is there an expectation of work when trained?

That's a great question.

In the past Gypsy dogs always had to earn their keep, usually as guards and or pot fillers. These days not so much, but I would hate it if any dog of mine wouldn't hunt or act as a watchdog.  

A dog in my family now is to all intents and purposes just a pet, but will be trained to a level that makes them easy to own.

I used to train my dogs to a very high standard simply because I enjoyed doing it, but in reality you need them to be reliable in just a few commands to be streets ahead of the average dog and pleasure to own.

Everyone should teach these commands.

NO - This means whatever you are doing, stop it. It's the best single thing you can teach.  

Come - Without doubt the most common fault with most dogs is they won't come back until they want to. Teaching good recall can can be so easy when done properly that it's almost like you made no effort at all, but get it wrong and it's the most difficult thing ever.

Stay - So useful to be able to put your dog somewhere and know he will stay there until you say different. don't bother about making him sit or lie down, you choose the place, let him choose the position. Allow him to get comfortable, he may be there for a while.

Heel - This shouldn't mean he is glued to your leg with his head bent at a crazy angle so that he can stare into your face as he walks, it should just mean stay close to me like you were on a lead, even when you're not.

I am also interested on how you came by a dog on Christmas eve. Who sells a dog on Christmas eve? I like to imagine you holding to ransom this years must-have toy, a tickle-me elmo or somesuch, and holding out until someone agreed to swap it for the dog.
