Slow day at work...

On the subject of time, I learned today about this......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague_astronomical_clock

You been to see it? 605 years old today, google tells us, & still ticking along nicely.

Looks a bit complicated to me.

That clock.

I love taking people to see it.

It's the biggest disappointment ever when it does its thing. So giving it a big build up and then watching the disappointment is always fun.

The tower though, climbing up that. Amazing view. I'll take one this weekend if the weather is good.

Went to Prague for the first time this July, loved it. The clock may not seem to be amazing in this day and age but must have seemed like magic 600 years ago.

I was impressed with Prague in general - beautiful city. THe clock was nice but I tried to see touristy bits quick, then wander further afield.

Progress is good on the stained glass front - ready for soldering now. Once it's soldered I can finally get a picture of it on the light box & see the full effect. Sadly that won't be for another week and a half as I'm going to solder it at class as I'm worried about messing it up after all this work...

Yesterday I got to see my teacher's latest installation, at the local primary school her kids go to. Everybody at the school has cut a bit for this, kids, teachers secretaries, the janny all included. It's full of local references like grouse, the black tailed trout that only occur in the area round the town, lead mine workings etc. It's a beautiful windswept place & has one of the most involved communities I know of.

Was delighted with the lucky timing that let me get the picture with the sunlight reflecting off the wall....

Some pics from Leadhills (not mine) - it's only a couple of miles from the highest village in Britain, many years (and stone) ago I did the grouse beating up in the hills around there.

The black tailed trout (a sign of lead poisoning - so not edible).

Although I like my privacy, I love to see involved communities. Most people had that mindset back in the day.

That village is proper time-warp material.

I love the glass work btw. Those schoolchildren will tell their grand kids, "I did that bit"

A confession - the photo above is from the next village along, Wanlockhead, but at least it's got a water powered beam engiine that used to pump water out of the mines, which should please Tikay.

Spent a couple of hours here today. It's one of my favorite places to browse.

I wonder if Geo has ever been to an army surplus depot

Eric Henderson who owned Anchor Supplies was a regular at Gala/Stakis Nottingham Tom and I suspect that you might even have played with him on one of your early visits to Nottingham.

He emigrated to Australia on one of those £5 tickets in the 1950's and went prospecting somewhere in the hills and made his fortune when he struck an opal seam or so the story goes.

He also spent some time in (British) Guyana where he fell in love with a young girl about forty years his junior who he married and brought back to Nottingham. He sired four kids with her, they lived in a house in Sherwood just up the road from me.

He appeared to be a working-class man of simple tastes, that's the impression he gave at the casino although we all knew he was a millionaire, but one Saturday after I had been at the auction in the cattle market I bumped into Eric. It was hardly surprising as he had a big Anchor place there, but he was walking towards his beautiful Rolls-Royce and was sporting a silver-topped walking cane.

I believe he died a few years ago.

It's a small world Ralph, especially the bit the Nottingham is in.

Not so much the mine, but a question for you. (Those photos are excellent, incidentally).

It is my imagination, or are an awful lot of houses in Scottish villages faced in predominantly white stucco?

White stucco is lovely, & my recollection of driving through the Highlands is that the majority of houses & especially little Chapels seem to be white stucco? Pretty sure there are nothing like as  many in England or Wales.

Maybe the clay in Scotland is not suitable for making facing bricks?

Whatever the reason, I think it's lovely.
