Lovely photos Tom
Good to see you and Mrs Red out and about enjoying yourselves

Hi Craig. Great to hear from our Aisia correspondent.

Mrs Red & I have been on lockdown, (well shielding actually, I have a lung condition) for several months, so it was really great to get out and about again.

It looks like cases are on the rise again now though, so our freedom might be short lived.

Plenty to keep me busy at home though. It's hedge trimming time at the moment.

How are things in your corner of the globe?

Hi Tom
Everything is fine in China.  After the initial outbreak of Covid and the strict measures of lockdown that were put in place fairly quickly here, we now seem to be living a fairly normal way of life.  Everything is back open except the borders so a lot of foreigners ( expats ) who didn’t come back in time are now locked out and cannot get back at this time.
The closed borders are frustrating as I like to visit other parts of Asia  every few months for a few days get away , I’m very fortunate as it’s quite inexpensive to do so. This is now obviously not possible.
I was also looking forward to coming back at Xmas to see family and friends but this looks highly unlikely as I won’t be able to get back.
Let’s hope 2021 is a better year for everyone

Craig,

How is Micky Wernick these days? Not heard much about him recently.

Hi Tony
I don’t  know mate as I have not been in touch for years. I can’t believe  I have been out the Uk over 11 years now . Time flies and all that .
I was  actually wondering the same thing the other day.

Frankie Knight passed away recently which was very sad to learn of but he had been ill for a while

11 years, crikey. It seems no time ago that we were having fun at J10.

I hope he's OK, he was unwell a few years ago but staged a bit of a comeback.

Frankie, yes, very sad. He used to organise all the Vegas trips for everyone, as you know.

Melvin Bragg- Dennis Potter's last interview.

Potter, diagnosed with terminal cancer has weeks to live and is controlling his pain with Champaign and a hip flask full of morphine.

Some will find nuggets of gold in the first 10/15 minutes.

I tried to Google when beef hit £1 per lb but I couldn't find the answer.

I'm guessing around 1975.

Also, when did petrol hit £1 a gallon and when were fags £1 a packet?

I do know when fags hit £2 per-packet as that's when I packed them in - 1992/3.

Best I can do.

For 1975 for cigarettes

PRICES:
This was an era of rocketing prices as inflation reached 25% in the UK. The average house price was £11,000, you could buy a car for £1,840, while the average annual salary was £2,500. A loaf of bread cost 19p, a pint of beer around 30p, and a packet of 20 ciggies - socially acceptable at that time - around 42p

This site says 1980 for £1 a gallon

https://www.retrowow.co.uk/social_history/80s/how_much_did_things_cost.html

and this site says just over a pound in 1982 for cigarettes

You were right about the mid 70's - but I could only find evidence for it from New Zealand.

I'd guess it was about the same in the UK(?)

I'm sure you are right Jon.

Just before I got married I remember my mam saying, "God help you youngsters of today, a pound a pound for a bit of beef, its scandalous"

Isn't the beef thing a bit "it depends".

I went to university at the end of the 80s and belly pork was only about 50p a pound, and sure you could pick things like tripe/liver for much the same.

So I am thinking you could probably still get some cuts of beef for less than a pound around then?

I think I still have an old Delia Smith cook book called Frugal Food from back then somewhere.  Will try and find it.

You can still buy that book, but am hoping mine has all the old prices in.   Was great for cooking on a shoestring back then.

I am thinking oxtail was super cheap back then too.   Does that count as it was mainly bone?

https://www.nationalchickencouncil.org/about-the-industry/statistics/wholesale-and-retail-prices-for-chicken-beef-and-pork

If you look at these then it gives the US retail price as 250 cents a pound for beef in 1980.  The exchange rate was about $2.5/£1 back then.  So I think the general price for beef must have been about a pound a pound sometimes in the late 1970s or 1980.

I am guessing I could have still got beef shin or similar for around a pound a pound back in the late 80s.

You are 100% correct Dooby, but... (There's always a but)

When I was growing up cash was always in short supply and my mam was an expert at making a small amount of money go a long way.

When we moved to a new area my mam would immediately start grooming, (I think that's a fair word to use in this context) the local butcher.

After several visits which seemed to involve a lot of chatting and probably a little flirting she and he would be on first name terms and he would always have a 5 bob wrap-up waiting for her. This would consist of a couple of pounds of squashed/ripped sausage, fatty joint ends, off-cuts that were too small to sell etc. Stuff that probably didn't look too appetising to his regular customers but tasted delicious.

My dad was a simple man who made few demands, however, one thing he insisted on was a topside joint for our Sunday dinner. To my memory, it was his one extravagance.

So although you definitely could buy cheaper, and in my opinion tastier joints like skirt, silverside, brisket, or perhaps lamb or pork, (Leg of lamb was dirt cheap back then) once a week we had a piece of topside.

Sunday tea was beef sandwiches with home made pickles followed by strawberry jelly with evaporated milk.
