Cat reaction speeds are incredible Dave, almost like super powers.
I was was watching a video about domestic cat reaction speeds the other day and there was one cat catching house flies with a flick if it's paw, and another taunting a snake and then just dodging the strike like a boxer dodging a punch.

All those neighbourhoods ablaze in LA, many of them millionaire mansions. Plus the contents and the cars etc. Surely there comes a point when the insurance can't afford to pay?

Don't know about fires/LA, but I think it is very difficult to get insurance in Florida and other hurricane/storm prone states.

It isn't a really massive loss yet, so don't think there is a good reason not to pay.  Suspect insurance in Malibu is already hugely expensive to pay; they seem to have fires annually these days.  In the UK we have a flood re which is where you can go if you can't get flood insurance in the UK.  It is Government backed, and don't know if they have something similar in Malibu.

Palisades is a once in a generation thing, so don't expect insurance was impossible.  Though that might change next year!

You do get some weird stuff in the US; I have some vague memories that some states put limits on premiums for car insurance.  It didn't mean lots of young people got car insurance, it meant nobody under a certain age got car insurance.

Similar issues with health insurance, where by people become effectively uninsurable, as their health insurance is more than they could ever pay.  But if they limit the price, the insurers woudn't sell to that market, so they wouldn't get insurance anyway.

Went to he dentist today to get a crown replaced. Instead of having to bite into a gluey thing for the impression of the teeth, the dentist used a 3 d scanner. In a couple of weeks I'll find out if the crown fits in an epic old school vs new tech battle.

Seems many insurers were withdrawing from the California property market because of the wildfires even before this.

I've been trying to get a rough idea of the cost of the average house in LA. It seems to be around a million plus contents. The latest figures say over 5000 homes destroyed.

So, 1000000 x 5000 + contents + vehicles + loss of earnings + temporary accommodation costs = A lot.

Why do people keep calling me "Yourself"?

It's starting to get on my wick.

I asked the Doctor's receptionist yesterday, "Why does yourself call myself yourself?"

She seemed confused.

Morning Trev.

Here at Chez Red we have moved from flood alert to frost alert.

We have a "Guest bathroom" in a portacabin on the yard. It houses, among other things, a shower cubicle and a toilet so that visitors don't have to crap in our chalet.

It's unheated, so a couple of days ago I installed a little 1kw fan heater with a frost setting. When it comes on it only runs for about 5 mins then goes off for half an hour but it seems to be doing a great job.

Last night the lowest recorded temperature in the bathroom was 1c whereas the adjoining "Guest kitchen" got down to -6c.
