An article in the Daily Telegraph a day or two ago referred to the "Basil Brush Show" being in legal hot water, as they had referred to "gipsies" (sic) being, by nature, thieves.
Anyway, the article referred to "gipsies", not "gypsies". (And note, in both cases, the lower case "g").
Puzzled by is it "y" or "i", I went to Cambridge University Online Dictionary, which stated.....
gypsy, gipsy Show phonetics
noun [C] (UK ALSO Romany)
a member of a race of people originally from northern India who typically used to travel from place to place, and now live especially in Europe and North America:
...which struck me as odd on no less than three counts.
1) I seem to recall you Posted that Gypsies (Gipsies?) originated from Egypt, & phonetically, that adds up. But they say India.
2) It refers to a race of people from India (upper case I), but gypsies with a lower case "g". Is this institutional bigotry? And "Romany" gets an Upper-Case "R".
3) Is it "Gipsy" or Gypsy"?
Just curious!
1: I said India. People thought we were from Egypt, hence "Egyiptians = Gypsies"
http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=30601.msg646644#msg646644
2: Yes
3: Gypsy
1) Ah, thank you.
2) Ah-ah, thank you.
3) Ah-ah-ah, thank you.
Good this brevity lark. Less room for spelling errors.

Sorry for the somewhat curt answers.
I appreciate the questions, but with the lower case "g" bigotry thing, I thought I had better limit myself to a one word answer.
If I allow myself to get started properly, I will spew out several pages, and I don't want to go down the "Ram it down their throats" route.

Tom, one thing that I wonder about is that since the title "Gypsy" is basically a misnomer based on a misaprehension, why and at what point was it adopted by yourselves ?

I would consider it more of an education than a ramming if you did have your say.

That's a great question Ralph, it's a shame I don't know the answer. I can only assume that having been called Gypsy by everyone for so many generations, we gradually came to accept it.

Imagine if this quote was how people remembered you for future generations?

Hello Tom, quick question what is your favourite book and why?
Wow Sov!!! That's not a quick question.
Reading has been my life-long passion. I've read more books than you could shake a stick at if you shook for a month of Sundays.
If I was forced, I mean really "gun to my head" forced. I could probably narrow it down to a favorite
type
of book.
The category I would choose would be the triumph over disaster, against all odds stories. True ones, no fiction. Preferably autobiographical. I like the author to be able to tell me exactly how it felt.
If you were to go even further and threaten to shoot my dog if I didn't narrow it down to just one book, I would have to choose this one. It's called "Jump for life" by Ruth Altbeker Cyprys.
It's the true story of a young Jewish woman's struggle to survive the Holocaust, told in her own words.
One day Ruth was a doctor, a mother, a wife, a loved and respected member of her community, the next she was a dirty Jewess with a death sentence on her head.
Unlike countless thousands of others, Ruth didn't just accept her fate, she fought back. When she and her infant daughter were loaded into a cattle truck bound for the death camps, she took out a hacksaw blade that she had kept concealed in her boot for months. Then, while her fellow passengers looked on, too scared to lift a finger to help least they "get into trouble" She cut a hole in the side of the speeding carrage and threw her baby out.
She then threw her self out, landing head first on the rails and knocking herself unconscious.....
I'd better stop before I spoil the story.

I like to read the full length versions of this kind of story. You will find dozens of them at your local library.

So anyway, I've been chipping away at the $2/4 online cash all week but not really making much progress. Then this morning I happened to notice a $5/10 game with two known fish sitting at it.
I put my name on the list, and befre you could say six smart fellas felt smart, I was playing with the big boys.
I lost $500 of my first pull up when fish number one got married to his flush draw, but I buckled down, and soon I had over $2000 in front of me and was showing a profit of over $600.
Then I got Kings.
I make it $30 to go from mid position, a very solid player behind me re-pops it to $90. Everyone else folds.
I re-re-raise to $260 and he moves all in for $1200.
I call, and of course he has the aces.
I strongly suspected aces before I called, but I can't go around passing kings pre. Or can I?
Could/should I have got away?
I'm about £800 down since my last cash update.

easy to say that the aces were obvious after the event but always so tough to fold, especially online with the time bar ticking down. You would prob have laid it down if it was live.
