Chambers has 2 definitions of the verb to gamble, you would I assume consider yourself a gambler based on the first and consider yourself to not be a gambler based on the second.

gamble verb (gambled, gambling) 1 tr & intr to bet (usually money) on the result of a card game, horse race, etc. 2 (also gamble something away) to lose (money or other assets) through gambling.

No. My point is I don't think the act of betting money on the result of someting that you have influence over necessarily makes you a gambler. So I disagree with Chambers.

Oxford goes for:

gamble

  • verb 1 play games of chance for money; bet. 2 bet (a sum of money). 3 take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

  • noun 1 an act of gambling. 2 a risky undertaking.

  — DERIVATIVES gambler noun.

  — ORIGIN from obsolete gamel ‘play games’, or from the verb GAME1.

I think this shows that Chambers is lacking because this seems like a much better definition to me.

You could put gambling on games of pure chance under defn 1, but even if you disagreed with the notion that they should have clarified whether "games of chance" meant pure chance, or a mixture of skill and chance - if you can influence the outcome, but their is still a risk involved then defn 3. would still cover it.

much like bookies, they have the odds in their favour but I'm sure you've seen independant bookmakers who've gone bust.

Taking out any form of insurance is gambling (you bet on a bad thing happening). Any investment plan or pension involved with shares is also gambling. Even a savings account is gambling as, technically, the bank may not be there tomorrow morning.

Yes - because they could lose - it's just unlikely.

Now we're getting to it. I think what I disagree with then is Joe public's interpretation of a gambler. i.e. someone who has no controll over wheather they win or lose, when actually, (according to the dictionary) you are still a gambler even if you have almost no chance whatsoever of losing.
