Chambers has 2 definitions of the verb to gamble, you would I assume consider yourself a gambler based on the first and consider yourself to not be a gambler based on the second.
Quote
gamble verb (gambled, gambling) 1 tr & intr to bet (usually money) on the result of a card game, horse race, etc. 2 (also gamble something away) to lose (money or other assets) through gambling.
so you're both right, and wrong
No. My point is I don't think the act of betting money on the result of someting that you have influence over necessarily makes you a gambler. So I disagree with Chambers.

Lol. Yes I know what you are saying, but where do you draw the line?
Chambers says it's gambling if you bet money on the result of a card game, so are casino owners that offer blackjack gamblers, even though they can't (over time) lose?

Oxford goes for:
Quote
gamble
• verb 1 play games of chance for money; bet. 2 bet (a sum of money). 3 take risky action in the hope of a desired result.
• noun 1 an act of gambling. 2 a risky undertaking.
— DERIVATIVES gambler noun.
— ORIGIN from obsolete gamel ‘play games’, or from the verb GAME1.
I think this shows that Chambers is lacking because this seems like a much better definition to me.
You could put gambling on games of pure chance under defn 1, but even if you disagreed with the notion that they should have clarified whether "games of chance" meant pure chance, or a mixture of skill and chance - if you can influence the outcome, but their is still a risk involved then defn 3. would still cover it.

Yes - because they
could
lose - it's just unlikely.

yes.
much like bookies, they have the odds in their favour but I'm sure you've seen independant bookmakers who've gone bust.
+ev gambling is still gambling and you can still lose

Taking out any form of insurance is gambling (you bet on a bad thing happening). Any investment plan or pension involved with shares is also gambling. Even a savings account is gambling as, technically, the bank may not be there tomorrow morning.
Everyone's a gambler.
Especially Kenny Rogers.

Now we're getting to it. I think what I disagree with then is Joe public's interpretation of a gambler. i.e. someone who has no controll over wheather they win or lose, when actually, (according to the dictionary) you are still a gambler even if you have almost no chance whatsoever of losing.

I've been putting this off for about 4 years, but now the time has come. I have loads of pics and docs on my lappy and I need to back them up. (especially as this lappy is on its last legs)
What's the best (By best I mean easiest, cheapest and most fool proof) way of doing it please?

I have some good news and some bad news for you Tom.
The good news is that I managed to find some of that double-pistachio lokum and bought a couple of packs.
The bad news is obv. I've eaten them and plan to restock.

Because I'm too idle to get up and find the remote, I'm watching Sid James in "Bless this House"
Very funny it is too, if you're 5 years old. Any older and it's utter drivel. The trouble is, I can remember watching it in my 20s and enjoying it. Were we really ever that innocent, or was it just me?

Bugger!
Mrs Red and I bought some off the market the other day but it turned out to be a poor imitation of that stuff you get.
