I need to start reading fiction books and stop reading biographies
Why?
What I mean is
Why?
Because while reading biographies feeds my curiosity and general nosiness about what makes people tick, they dont feed the imagination and make your mind do that bit of extra work.
ps. I didnt mean stop reading biogs completely, Its just that i read them exclusively at the expense of reading fiction ... I need to mix it up a bit

That was a terrific read - Tighty gave it to me, I think. Loved every page. I only read non-fiction.

Now I'm not saying that some of these people don't have genuine grievances, but imagine if they were talking about blacks, Jews or Asians instead.

It always difficult to tell if the people that threads such as this are about are Romany Gypsys or the more general 'travellers', but I would guess the latter, as the difference between the two is not that well known among the general population. They just think that 'people who live in caravans and pitch up in fields' = Gypsys.
I can't remember if you've talked about this earlier in the thread, but what is the general Gypsy opinion (if there is one) on non-Gypsy travellers?

General opinion is that they cause a lot of bad feeling toward us because people don't know the difference.
The truth is, there are good and bad in all societies. Surely it could never be right to suggest that all Gypsies are good and all non-Gypsy travellers are bad.
My point was that, rightly or wrongly, you can still get away with referring to Gypsies in the vielest if terms without fear of retribution.
I often see pubs with signs saying "No Gypsies" in the window. Imagine if that sign said "No Blacks".

like you say its good and bad all around. Where I live I have a park just down the road and a un-used ex car hire yard, when I brought my flat a group of travellers moved in on the ex car place, they wrecked it smashed all the windows and left a huge mess. It cant be proven but for the three weeks they where there lots of local thefts went on and stopped after they left.
About 6 weeks ago another group turned up on the little park and we all thought here we go again, but they were great, they cleaned up the park, picked up all the dogs mess, all the rubbish I came out one day to find one of the old boys actually fixing the bench with new wood (that the locals had destroyed) they made the park a much nicer place and they were lovely people. I had a few drinks in the local with a few of them but the group before were banned from the local pub.

What if, after experiencing the first group and then reading the comments on Charltonlife, someone decided to set fire to one of the caravans of the second group?

I have read a lot to do with the holocaust, I find it very interesting but chilling at the same time. I met an elderly polish couple once when I was selling door to door. They were among the nicest people I have ever met and when the wife reached out to pour some tea I saw her tattoo, and tears welled in my eyes. They placed the sale but I took all of my commission out. I didn't tell them that, you don't embarrass proud people now do you.
I only had the pleasure of meeting my wife’s Grandfather once. He was a wealthy Jewish Russian immigrant that had lived in America for over 60 years. He had long retired into a gated community in Palm Springs and loved live playing golf and playing cards with his buddies.
He sat me down a few times and we talked about his past, he was a teenager in the war and found himself a POW camp, I never found out which one but it must have been one of those where very few managed to get out alive. Both his parents and brother died in the camp but he was one of the lucky few that managed to get out. He seemed open to chatting about this so I probed him how he managed to get away.
He pointed to a scar, lump he had on his head and touched it. This was his reminder of the times there and his eventual escape. He continued, most the guards where evil bastards and took great pleasure in causing pain and terror amongst the captives they would often come into their quarters where they slept and hit people randomly. After a certain amount of time he had simply had enough and confronted one of the guards. The guards were amazed someone not only had the strength but the courage to confront them about theirs acts of cruelty. The next thing he remembers was waking up in a mass grave around half a mile from the POW camp.
He managed to walk away and find refuge in a nearby farm. He believes the guards hit him on his head with a rifle and said he was dead and put in the mass graves along with loads of others, knowing full well he was not dead. He believes they rewarded him for confronting them in the living quarters.
I was not sure what to think when he told me this story, if it was true or not. He did say he was never sure if it was a good or bad thing having to leave his family in the camp knowing full well they would not leave. Ahh well I wont ever forget Fred Toben
he was my hero.
